Do you boycott anything?
The only thing I consciously think about boycotting these days is Gillette products, because of their testing on animals. I will admit their Fusion razor is excellent - they mailed free samples to everyone so I tried it, but I'm not going to buy it because it's Gillette.

6. Same here.
I have a blender I bought in 1983 that still works fine. It's a Hamilton Beach made in the US. It's a harvest gold color, which is so outdated, but it works just fine. My husband wanted to upgrade it recently, but we could not find a single blender, either high-end or low-end, that was NOT made in China. We will stick with our trusty harvest gold one, thank you very much.

I saw some footage of ducks being force feed in a tiny dark French farm the other day. You could tell the ducks were scared shitless of the farmer just by the way they were falling over themselves trying to avoid him. Sick fucker. Then they pulled out one of their livers, and it was big as a normal sized duck, or 10 times the normal size of a duck liver. I wanted to machete the guy's head off

5. Disney, as much as I can. I used to boycott Burger King and Snarl's Jr.
due to having read that they contribute to those against planned parenthood.

Why Disney, aside from the vomitous, one-dimensional pap they assault us with? (Does NOT count Pixar.) Mr. Disney is said to have been the hidden Hollywood reporter to the Macarthy (sp) hearings, and ruined many lives. That and much more.

34. Disney is up and down.
Eisner leaned Democratic, and was a strong environmentalist. Disney stood up to the Southern Baptists over gay family beneifits, and hosts a gay pride week annually. DisneyWorld is actively pro-environment, and incorporates anti-developer and pro-environment messages in many of its attractions. It's films have again regressed, but during the 90s under Eisner Disney went from their helpless heroine themes to a multi-cultural, gender-equality message, with films like Pocahontas, Mulan, and The Lion King. They also introduced the Studio Ghibli films to America.

On the down side, they also turned out Beauty and the Beast, and various horrid sequels, and their Disney Channel shows are stereotypical, sexist, and usually, with some exceptions, poorly done.

I hated Disney in the early 90s, but came to like them. I'm fading back to dislike in the last few years. But they are such a diverse company, it's hard to have just one opinion of them. Like most mega- corporations, they try to have something for every market.

It's a caustic mix. They should straighten themselves out. No money to them until they do. As punishment, you will view "Newsies" and "Valiant" ten times each, ala' the Ludovico treatment. ;-)

58. Here's what I don't get about Walmart. I live in Chicago. The only Walmart I've ever
stepped foot into is the one by my office. I never shop there but my company sells products to them so I sometimes have to check out the stores to see where they've placed our stuff. All three or four times I've been in Walmart, it has been filled to the brim with the skankiest, trashiest people ever. I'm not referring to poor people. I've lived at or below the poverty line plenty of times in my life. I'm talking about people who can't be bothered with common courtesty, can't speak in normal conversational tones, can't be bothered to pay one ounce of attention to their children unless it's to hit them or scream at them. They open up packages of food, eat what they want, then leave the package. They throw merchandise on the floor, and run over other's discarded merchandise with their carts. They cut in line, scream at the staff, spend the entire time talking at top volume on their cell phones, and have hissy fits at anyone who tries to stop them.

I mean, I *know* there are gross, rude people everywhere. But that one Walmart I've been to seems to import or attract the absolute dregs of humanity. I just don't get it because none of the other stores in the area are like that. The Target, CostCo, Jewel, Pier 1, Michaels, etc. all seem to have their share of idiots and normal people. But the Walmart is like a whole different thing.

*shudder*

Also try to avoid chain restaurants because of the nastiness they pass off as food, but it's harder and harder to find independent restaurants where we live. We've got a couple of good local chains, though, which are often our salvation.

27. I have no choice on Walmart either.
I try to purchase the item at a local place if I can but sometimes Walmart is all I can use. I could drive to another place but that would be a 40 minute drive and would the gas wasted, the wear and tear on the vehicle, etc be worth it just to say that I didn't buy it at Walmart?

(I know-I'm going on a bit but it's a topic that annoys me around here. You're not a good liberal if you shop at Walmart but many of the small town libs here have no other choice. In my town, they even put the school supply list at Walmart and Dollar General, instead of handing them out.)

22. I'm with ya on the Gillette razors.
I really liked the original Mach3 and thought that since there were several generations of razors after that one that Gillette would make the price of the Mach3 a little more reasonable. It's a great razor. But if Gillette insists on being as piggish as they are it just gives me an excuse to shop around. Even if I happen to buy a store brand that Gillette happens to make I still will not buy their over-priced name-brand razors. Bic or Personna for me.

Oh yeah, Walmart is so far off our radar that I forgot that we never go there!

Also, although Fulton is famous for it's fast food strip (Mc.D's, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut 2(@ count them 2!) Dunkin' Donuts, Wendy's, Frajita Grill, Domino's, Arby's, J-Rek's and Subway) , we only get take-out form the local drive-in, the local Chinese restaurant and the local pizzeria.

Oh, I forgot - no Nestle's because they shut down their plant here, no Hershey's because they're moving production to Mexico.

because they institute bunny rabbit abuse.
An’ I boycott GE
because they make nucular weapontree (sic)
An’ I boycott Led Zeppelin
because I think Robert Plant sings horribly
An’ I boycott Folgers’
cuz they exploit the colombian coffee picker
An’ I boycott fur
because of something I read on a bumper sticker.
An’ I boycotted work last week
because I had to attend a political rally.
And I boycott tuna fish
cuz I was told to by Kirstie Alley.

Cuz I’m self-righteous, pretentious, and politically correct.
My views are slightly to the left of Karl Marx and Bertolt Brecht.
And I’ve even considered joining a Buddhist sect.
And it hurts me when I realize this world is nearly wrecked.

An’ that’s one reason why I recycle.

I recycle grass, leaves, tinfoil and bottles and cans;
paper, plastic, and other people’s ideas;
wood, clothing, furniture, and rubber.
And I also recycle the music of the Grateful Dead, just like this:

“Busted down on bourbon street,
set up like a bowlin’ pin…”
There’s my Grateful Dead cover song for the day.
An’ I think everbody who does a Grateful Dead song has integrity.
And I think everyone who ain’t got integrity should do a Grateful Dead song.
Think about it. Pretty deep, huh?

Cuz I’m self-righteous, pretentious, and politically correct.
My views are slightly to the left of Karl Marx and Bertolt Brecht.
And I’ve even considered joining a Buddhist sect.
And there isn’t a hidden injustice in this world that I can’t detect.

And that’s just one of the reasons that I don’t eat meat.
I also don’t eat anything processed, manufactured, or artificially preserved.
And you’ll never catch me munchin’ on anythin’ flavored or sweetened either.
In fact my diet consist of four foods;
rice,
soy,
tofu,
and lentils.

Oh, I’m self-righteous, pretentious, and politically correct.
My views are slightly to the left of Karl Marx and Bertolt Brecht.
And I’ve even considered joining a Buddhist sect.
And there isn’t a superficial, shallow, or conventional idea that I don’t reject,
cuz I’m just so hip.

And my parents were hippies too.
They let me smoke pot when I was like five.
And I organized my first political movement at the age of eleven.

Freedom.

Now I’m gonna show you how passionate I am.

Never thought I would use parental blocking feature on cable box, but decided to block Fox Noise during 2004 election. Alot less yelling and cursing at the TV, at least until football season!

57. Oberweis Dairy products, Mobil, Walmart. The only one that is difficult is
Oberweis because their milk is DE-licious. But Jim Oberweis is a total RW asshole, so I will not buy it.

I never shop at Walmart so that's easy. I would hate to live in a place where Walmart was the only option. Same with Mobil.

Not too difficult since I'm not a big fan of salmon in general. The process to make factory salmon does terrible things to the Earth's oceans and fish supply.

63. MBNA, Wal Mart, Dominoes, NASCAR, IKEA
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 04:24 PM by Neo
MBNA is not around anymore, part of Bank of America now, but they were the single largest contributor to * campaign.

Wal Mart of course for a list far too long to mention, their just plain evil.

Dominoes for the fundy crap plus the pizza just plain sucks.

NASCAR for extremely crass tasteless commercialism, pandering hard to the right, and environmental destruction. a conservative sport if their ever was one.

IKEA for the destruction of an ancient Chinese tomb and their incredibly bland isometric designs gentrifying homes everywhere.

70. Hershey's chocolate
Because of closing all their American plants and outsourcing. It's no loss: it was crappy chocolate, anyway. Ghirardelli's still made in the SF Bay Area, and it's much, much better.

I also try to avoid products tested on animals, but lately even some of their labels are starting to creep me out: "Not tested on animals. Only tested on humans". This is somehow supposed to reassure me? "We didn't test this on bunny rabbits, we sprayed it in the eyes of third-world toddlers instead"? I'll pass, thanks.

84. Oftentimes this means it was tested with friends or employees
of the company. And usually it's tested by actually using the product as intended. Then checking to see if anyone broke out, got sick, etc. Doesn't usually mean spraying in anyone's eyes. Which proves that the eye-spraying tests were never necessary to begin with!

...I've never really liked Ghirardelli's. Every bar I've gotten seems like brown wax to me - almost no flavor. I can hardly detect any real "chocolate aroma." Don't know why this is...

Seriously, though, only Wal-Mart. I won't set foot in one if I can avoid. It has to be pretty much the last resort. Like it's 2 am and I have a bad headache and no aspirin in the house or something. Well I will use the restroom and then not buy anything.

77. Lots of things.
Overtly we boycott Walmart, Shell, and any foods with HFCS or enriched flours. Overall we boycott tons of stuff because we are totally not into the consumerism that plagues this country. The only real shopping we do is for groceries and we try to buy at the small local stores and farm markets when possible. We don't have cable TV or go out to restaurants much at all. We just aren't in to buying shit.

91. Wally-World, Faux news, msnbc, and
gas stations other than Citgo (when there's a Citgo around). Even when I'm shopping on eBay the first thing I look at is the state that the seller is in. If that state is severely red, or has a right-wing nut job in it...I won't buy from that seller. Instead I'll look for the same item from a different seller. The percentage of positive feedback also is considered.
