OK . . . Am I the only person still on dialup??
I live in a metro area, yet Bellsouth/AT&T say that it will take a good 6 months until DSL is available in this area. Comcast is still rebuilding the crappy lines that Adelphia left over, so no Cable Modem either. I have netzero and I just hate it. Yes, I only pay $10 a month, but I keep getting disconnected from it for no reason whatsoever. Never mind that I miss phone calls while I'm on the internet, but the speed is so slow that my husband has given it up entirely (he has a DSL at work and finds our system archaic - it is).
I have DirecTV and they have that Hughes Net, but that is $80 a month for the slowest speed. Ouch!!! Well, I guess I just have to wait until AT&T is here!

1. Wow, that is not right at all.
Strange that it's gonna take 6months to get DSL. Out here in the sticks I got hooked up in a matter of days.

2. No bundles with DirecTV?
These companies usually offer something to get more of your business.

Then it's $60 a month.
Why are these so expensive???

6. I'm still on dial up. I'm way back in the sticks in Arkansas and
the little independent phone company offering service, doesn't even offer DSL this far out. I have contacted some satellite companies, but they have not yet been in touch. Dial up may be my ONLY option.

8. If you have a V.92 modem and call waiting
There's no reason to miss calls.

I went with DSL last year and am very happy with it. Instead of $20 a month for dial-up Earthlink, I now pay $31 and it's about fifty times faster. Not as fast a cable, but plenty fast.

9. I am on dialup and understand what you mean by NetZero
It was awful. Being dropped or having the computer hang happened all the time when I was with them.

Now I'm with this company called Copper. Been with them for over a year and no problems like that at all.

12. You got Copper, too? First...
other person I heard of who has it, and it's comforting to hear you're happy with them, too.

Even when I get back on DSL or cable, I'm thinking of keeping them as a backup. I kept Earthlink for that reason a while back when I had DSL. Besides, neither Verizon nor Cablevision know shit about actually being an ISP and having a decent mail server. Nor did they always have a backup phone number for dialup access when the service went out.

Yeah, I'm on dialup, but...
dump NetZero and find someone else-- Netzero and its cousins are absolutely the worst.

I had free dialup when the county library system had it set up for members of local libraries, but now their killing it off 'cause not that many people use it and it's costing them bucks. So I ended up with copper.net and it's not bad at all. 10 bucks a month with few connection problems and usual connect speeds of 41-44K. Those connect speeds are about the best anyone around here gets with dialup because of the lousy phone lines.

No DSL because the switching station is about 6 miles away, but the cable company has a pretty good deal-- 60 bucks a month for existing cable customers gets you high speed access and unlimited phone (just like Vonage, but fewer hassles). Too bad the cable in this place is under someone else's name.

11. We still have dial-up here.
I'm in a rural area, but not far from "civilization." We have been on Verizon's "waiting list" for what seems like years. We just got cable TV here in the late 1980s, so I'll probably die waiting on DSL. Someday they will find my skeleton at my keyboard, covered with spider webs....

13. Dialup here
It stinks, too, because I'm trying to start a home business, but trying to get information out there is hard. I feel like I'm riding a bicycle down the interstate, trying to hand out fliers.
