How would you have written this line?
From the SOTU:

"...dozens of weapons of mass destruction-related program activities."

I'm thinking that's almost as clumsy as I was by the end of the speech. :)

"...Dozens of activities related to weapons of mass destruction"?

1. I wouldn't have written it at all. I wouldn't lie to the American people
and so would not have to offer clumsy, half-baked rationalizations for those lies, now would I?

3. The Original Wording Was INTENTIONAL...
they wanted the phrase "weapons of mass destruction" to come directly following the phrase "dozens of"

They were hoping that most Americans would not pay attention to anything that followed "related program activities".

5. Well, I was on my third vodka tonic by then
...and I did a spit-take, laughing out loud. ;)

It felt like a long-ass list of qualifiers to me.

7. Here's how I would have written that line for *
"Ooops. Damn...we thought he had the real weapons. I mean, we sold him some; the Brits sold him some...he had to have some, right? Well, we goofed. Me and Uncle Dick and the rest of us criminals all quit. Thank you, good night."

"My fellow 'murkins. I am a yellow-bellied sack of crap. I'm also a lying sumbitch. You remember what I said last year? Ha! Pack o' lies. Now I'm gonna say sumpthin' 'bout terra or WMDs or sumpin' like that, and all these Republicans are gonna stand up and applaud like the sad little puppets they are. Here, watch:

"...dozens of weapons of mass destruction-related program activities."

(applause)

"See? Suckers."

On edit: read this in your best Bill Hicks voice.

11. Actually, it's rather clever...
With enough multi-syllable words and the skillfull utilization of word order inversion-related hyphenation; the hell-confusing out of masses of weapons of mass destruction-fearing loyal Americans is bound to annihilate any semblance of understanding. Thus rendered into an intellectual meltdown-like state, millions of patriotic, God-fearing citizens will embrace a "whatever you say, George"-style philosophy of life.
