Drunk Priest Smashes Car Into Restaurant - 5 Injured

A Smithville priest who recently underwent treatment for alcoholism was charged with driving while intoxicated Monday evening after he crashed a small pickup into a restaurant, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper said.

Father Karel Fink, 61, pastor at St. Paul Parish in Smithville, was driving to La Cabaña Restaurant, west of Smithville on Texas 71, just before 7 p.m. when he smashed into it at a low speed, DPS Trooper David Adkins said. Fink's pickup ended up about 10 feet inside the restaurant, Adkins said.

Ten people in the restaurant were injured, and five were taken to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin or Smithville Regional Hospital, Adkins said. No one was seriously injured, he said.

Fink "said that instead of pressing the brake, he pressed the gas," Adkins said.

Adkins said Fink's blood-alcohol level was more than twice Texas' legal limit of .08.

Fink could not be located for comment Tuesday evening.
