Hee Haw debuts on CBS television as a summer replacement for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The country bumpkin musical comedy show quickly becomes an institution, airing weekly until its demise in December 1997.

Petros Philargos is elected Pope Alexander V by the Council of Pisa. This poses a certain amount of difficulty, as there already is a Pope in Rome, Gregory XII, and another in Avignon, Benedict XII. Ultimately, none of the three is willing to step down, leading the Chuch into a double schism.

1. I loved Hee Haw when I was a kid
We used to get it on some station out of NH, this was before cable was really hug, just had 5 channels or so. Muppet Show, Hee Haw, now *that* was weekend evening television at its finest :D

3. But the Smothers Brothers were SOOOO much better.
:P

Yeah, I'm too young to have watched them, but I've seen clips, and they were farkin' hilarious (not to mention they had some pretty subversive anti-Vietnam War stuff going on in their show (which is why it was cancelled).

6. Where oh where are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and I thought I'd found true love.
But you met another and PTHHP! you was gone.

I was playing 'doctor' with Monica Berry down in the basement of her parent's house. The examination was long and successful.

9. I knew I was cursed ...

That must be why. Hee Haw replaces the Smother's Brothers on the day I was born.

Yeah ... that about sums it all up.

The New York Mets make a key trade when they pick up Donn Clendenon from the Montreal Expos for Steve Renko and Kevin Collins.

Clendenon goes on to become the Most Valuable Player in the World Series that year as the Mets defeat the Baltimore Orioles in five games, securing the legend of the "Miracle Mets."
