Colleague of mine disses MLK ("communist, "no respect for law and order")
I have this right wing collegaue, a middle aged angry white male. He is a solid Bush supporter who calls Bush a "moral man" and a "good Christian". He regularly chides Islam as the "devil's religion". Anyway, today he said, "I don't see why we have to close everything one day a year because of Martin Luther King. He and his people closed down a lot of businesses in their day with these sit-ins and boycotts." He then added that there was "no King, but Jesus", and that King should not be honored because he "collaborated with communists" and had no "respect for law and order" (and we know what that means). When I reminded him of incidents like the bridge in Selma, the Bull Connor goons and the Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner murders he replied that "sometimes people overreact, but these people (and we know what that means) were messing with their way of life." He scoffed when I mentioned that King was a Christian minister. I should have known. To these people on the religious right blacks are not "real Christians". Mr. Bush can have these voters. I don't want them supporting our candidates.

1. Hating MLK will not make his dick longer. It just won't.
Perhaps if he answers the penis enlargement ads that come in my, and everyone else's, email each morning, he will feel more able to cope with his fellow man.

3. in a way, it's 'nice' that someone is honest today

I lived through the civil rights movement.

It totally freaks me out when 'everybody' acts as if MLK made his 'I have a dream' speech in Aug 1963, and all white Americans said 'Oh thank you, Dr. King. Now I understand; you are such a great American.'

Many in white America HATED him, despised him.

Less than 3 weeks after this speech, a black church in Birmingham was blown up and 4 black girls were murdered.

Oh, yeah. MLK has been such a hero to white Americans.

Many, like W, only praise dead - safely dead - blacks.

4. today is also Robert E. Lee day, if that makes him feel better...
"the law" that ML King had no respect for was the "law" that said blacks were not equal to whites.

5. Interesting how a private fault of sex on the side was used by GOP on MLK&
Clinton.

Indeed for both men, that was the only fault I know of - yet the press acts like it was scandal

The scandal was the way the press acted.

Kevin Philips new book states Clinton maybe made Bush possible - he says "maybe" - by the "overwhelming sleaze" in his administration. And we are to accept that there was sleaze. The same with Martin - since the FBI provided us with tapes of Martin relaxing without his wife, the racist fellow putting down Martin feels we must conclude that Martin was not as great as - in my opinion - he actually was great.

A bunch of bull from our racist press.

Just like they refuse to publish and follow the Sleaze trail laid down by Bush, they find no problem trying to tell us what is sleaze in any Dem or black. Not the we have a GOP right wing controlled press - they just act that way.

9. oh hell yes, the tabloid nature of Clinton coverage was to..
pave the way for Bush. Gotta make the Dem side look as bad as possible, for contrast. Then they know their guy will get unconditional support from the brownshirts specifically because he is NOT Clinton

7. No respect for law and order?
Funny how many people who use that phrase don't know what's in their own constitution, which is defined to be the supreme law of the land. Including the amendments, of course.

I guess the "order" is the important part, especially when the order is, "me and my kind first, then you can follow afterward and pick up our scraps."

And you work with this guy? You have my sympathy.

8. George Washington didn't have respect for law and order either.
He led an armed rebellion against his divinely annointed sovereign. Why we honor this man who dared to challenge the power of a monarch appointed by God Himself to rule over his colonial subjects is more than I can see.

Why we honor Abraham Lincoln, who strived to end slavery, which exists is the Bible and is approved of by Jesus Christ Himself, is a mystery.

Margaret Sanger got busted for obscenity, and a good thing, too. No respect for law and order. Why, sending information about birth control through the mail is a flagrant disregard for the just and temperate laws of our land.

11. I'm paraphrasing
I think it was Chris Rock (talking about MLK Day) who said something like, "Anybody who complains about getting a day off is an idiot."
