Midler May Withdraw Grammy Nomination
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/arts/AP-People-Bette-Midler.html

BOSTON (AP) -- For most artists, getting a Grammy Award nomination is a welcome piece of news. Not for Bette Midler, not this year.

In a twist of fate, her CD ``Bette Midler Sings The Rosemary Clooney Songbook'' is up against an actual Clooney album, ``The Last Concert.'' The other category nominees are Barbra Streisand, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennett and k.d. lang.

``I'm mortified. I'd really like Rosemary to win that Grammy. I can't believe I'm up against her,'' Midler told the Boston Globe. ``I'm going to look into withdrawing. I just think it's bad form if I won. You know, she never won a Grammy."

4. It's such an obvious attention getter
"I'm mortified." (Mortified at her sales figures) "I'd really like Rosemary to win that Grammy." (Veiled "I'm better than her, singing her songs, you should buy my record") "I can't believe I'm up against her," Midler told the Boston Globe. (Probably true) "I'm going to look into withdrawing." ("Please, someone write about me and my record, I need press!") "I just think it's bad form if I won." ("Really, I'm such a gracious sweetie, love me") "You know, she never won a Grammy." ("Repeat")

5. Oh, HER, not me!
I don't think she is this time--it is amazing that a major talent like Roemary Clooney never won a Grammy, when so many of today's no-talent twits win.

My God, EVEN Madonna has a couple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6. Maybe so
And I have a fleeting suspicion that the Grammy people would recognize that and give one to her post-mortem, they love that sappy shit. Midler's "withdrawal" is all about sales figures.

7. We'll see--anyway, it'll be a category that won't be on the telecast...
...I'm betting on kd Lang and Tony--just because there's two of them.

11. Like Bette Midler needs more attention?
Give me a break! She's had more fame and awards in her lifetime than Clooney ever got and she obviously realizes the absurdity of being nominated against the very artist her album was a tribute to. To suggest her comments were a publicity stunt is pretty harsh and cynical for the situation, don't you think? Or do you possess the magical ability to see into the hearts of grammy-nominated singers that I must so obviously lack? :eyes:

17. I doubt it
I got into a huge argument with him a couple of years ago at concert. We don't get along.

8. Is this what happens when you hit 1000 posts?
Do you automatically get so cynical that you always assume the worst about anyone's intentions?

9. Yep.
Why? What's your reason for getting to 1000 posts? Up to some sort of trouble I'll bet!

18. Get her out of the way, then-- less competition for Rod Stewart (n/t)

19. Rosie lost to Tony...
Every time she was nominated.

I suspect this is just a hype to draw a little attention from the decades-old Clooney/Bennet Grammy competition.

Rosie will most likely win regardless of Midler's status.
