eBay advice anyone?

Greetings Friends,

I have been gifted a mountain of old time 78 records (jazz, country, blues, big band, etc) and would like to figure out how to best offer them for sale - as single item sales and in "lots". Some of my friends rave about Ebay. Are they right? If so, could those with experience please advise as to whether the "eBay Store" or standard auction is preferred. My goal is to be fairly meticulous about getting "fair value" for the items and i have some time to dedicate for that purpose.

1. As a first step, you should do an eBay search for comparable items.

Amazon.com might be another option, though I believe they charge more in commission than eBay.

2. Yes, do search first.

Check the "completed items" option. You need to know if you have any valuable items. Google the high-value records for more info. If you find that you have many that have little value, maybe put them into groups. If you have time, sell them one at a time with a .99 opening bid. Figure out USPS postage for most places, add a little and use that as a fixed shipping cost to the contiguous US. Be sure to use a good cardboard mailer to protect from breakage.

And never forget the old maxim: "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Did you know they are still finding 200-year-old copies of the Declaration of Independence in New England antique stores and rummage sales, hidden behind family portraits and such?
