1. He lost most of that talent waaaaaaaayyyyy back in the mid-70's
Not surprised to hear that his latest isn't worth listening to. :-(

9. Well, my philosophy about music is pretty flippant
It's silly, but here goes. Music is one of the few expressions that are innate and isn't something we have to learn to enjoy. Everybody loves some sort of music because it is just buried in our soul when we are born. Even animals (besides human animals) dig music.

When it comes to picking what is good and what is bad, it is impossible because each person has something inside of them that vibes to whatever feels good to them personally. To me, ragging on someone's personal choice of music is like ragging on their eye color.

Like Elvis said, there's room for everybody.

Michael Bolton, of course, being the exception that proves the rule.

15. Possibly, but Elvis isn't around today...
A bit of a shame, he'd redact if not retract that little phrase if he heard some of what's being sung. Such as:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/eminem/crazyinlove.html (warning, it's a bit crude...)

I also loved ABC's music special last week. (not really) Or the part I bothered to watch before giving up in resignation over how our species has devolved. The song that had a terrific beat but the "person" singing it had a good chunk of words bleeped out. The background featuring three old ladies being tripped on their zimmer frames and canes and what not by the singer, who then use them as weapons against him was a tad bizarre too.

17. And why not?
Given a choice between airheaded empty music and slimy violent garbage pawned off as music, such as this little gem, one of many, the airheaded fluff is something of an improvement...

Of course, whether the musical style is good enough for purchase or if the music is sufficiently superior to how one feels about the artist at the time. Some use politics as a means to boycott individuals. Other individuals are given status they may not deserve, and so on...

Lennon wrote all the deeper stuff.

7. Nope. He tended to be less cynical in his lyrics, though, yes

But he wrote some of the greats. And -- in addition to writing some excellent stuff -- John wrote some utter garbage, especially the self-indulgent crap he put out at times post-Beatles.

'Deep,' in rock 'n' roll and pop music, is often synonymous with 'pretentious.'

13. No, he never HAD any talent. This is the guy who wrote THESE lyrics:
"Somebody's knocking on the door, somebody's ringing the bell,
"Somebody's knocking on the door, somebody's ringing the bell,
"Do me a favor, open the door, and let them in."

That's NOT talent. It's the worst songwriting EVER.

14. He also gave us the song "Wonderful Christmastime"
The ONE Christmas song that drives me nearly homicidal during the holidays.

Sometimes I wonder if McCartney is fucking with us. There's no way someone could be that bad just by accident.

"Won't you listen to what the man says? He says... DOW-DOW-DOW DOW-DOW-DOW-DOW DOW..."

16. i don't understand why these aged rock stars just don't silently go away
it's not like he hasn't had all the adulation, money, admiration, and respect than is healthy for one mere man to ever receive in a lifetime.

no. they can't leave it at that. i've been to modern rolling stones concerts. they are like a mockery of rock and roll. bloated, disneyesque, precise productions with very little in the way of roughness, debauch, and ENERGY necessary for a good live performance.

i've listened to david bowie's work in the 90s, and it makes me sad.

paul mccartney was a genius. lennon/mccartney did much significant work. why despoil that with subpar clamoring and struggling to remain relevant in a music world that values pushing units and creating the next britney more than it does promoting artistry?

glide gently into the sunset dinosaur rockers.

18. The day his album came out, I heard an NPR story about the record release at Starbucks.
He had been whining about poor sales on the previous album, and the sample track they played in the story really sounded terrible. I loved him in the Beatles and I liked a few Wings songs, but STOP ALREADY, PAUL!!!! :yoiks: All you're doing is embarrassing yourself.

19. The Beatles are my favorite band and his Wings stuff..
was what good adult contemporary is all about, but I have to agree. He has lost his voice, and seems directionless now. I might have been generous giving the new CD a C+.

I guess Yesterday, Maybe I'm Amazed, We Can Work It Out, Penny Lane, and Another Day are the work of a talentless hack...

You don't become a cultural icon after six years of work if you don't have talent...

21. He's sucked ever since the Beatles broke up.
Lennon and Harrison were able to put some good music out there from time to time, McCartney gave us 'silly love songs.'
He should quit now while he still has a few shreds of dignity left.

Wings isn't as good as The Beatles, but I think they are way up there. I think he's extremely talented. Sometimes a duo will become magic, which happened with the Beatles (Lennon/McCartney.)

I really think Band On The Run is a masterpiece, but we'll probably disagree there, too. Just opinions.

I have very strong feelings. When it comes to differences on someone like McCartney, I'll say 'it's just a difference of opinions' :)
Now if we're talking about Nickelback, someone who likes them is wrong. No room for discussion. :P
Good luck getting your business going! :hi:

I'll even give people a pass on Nickelback. I just don't like arguing music. Now politics is a different story, especially if there's a Freeper that tries to pontificate to me.

I'll see you later - have to go. :hi:

29. Yeah, it's odd.
Lennon was more interesting, but Paul clearly had a ton of talent and imagination early on. He practically invented melodic bass lines in pop arrangements for one. But he has only managed a small handful of decent songs since then, and a whole lotta treacly pap. Same thing happened to Stevie Wonder.

what you call treacly pap, I call good adult contemporary with some edge. Wings had a lot of it.

ON EDIT: wish that underrated bands post was still there. I would definitely add Wings.
