Other places I've lived: New York City, Hendersonville, NC, Boston, and now Portland, Oregon. This place is a kind of compromise -- hubby likes it warm and I like it cool.

I went to public high school and college in the Miami area. I don't know how I survived the climate!

However, Florida is beautiful and we do like to visit there in the wintertime.

We're going to Sanibel/Captiva area, Orlando, and South Miami Beach in March 2008.

Here's how I used to look when I lived there:

And the rural areas are decent places, and if I had to, I'd raise the children I may someday adopt there. When I go back home, I'm reminded by how I was raised by a village, and I think that's important.

If not, I'll say Toronto. Cannot stand that city! The rest of Canada calls it the "centre of the known universe" because Torontonians are completely oblivious to the fact that there is a whole country outside of their city limits. I'll take Montreal over Toronto any day.

My dad lives there now, and I am not overly fond of the area. Not the most openminded of people there. And I am actually looking forward to him moving up to Port Clinton, Ohio (Northwest Ohio) because its a much prettier area. Can't say much about Columbus though. I hear its nice. But Cincinnati...bleah! Oh yeah and don't forget..near the airport there..the Creationist Museum. I think that speaks volumes about that area...

34. I wouldn't choose to live there again
but some places, like Salt Lake City, are so cosmopolitan compared to the part of Utah I grew up in that they would make it all seem "liberal" in comparison.

Skiing though, if you ski, you will love the skiing in Utah. Wonderful dry powder. Lots of it up Cottonwood canyon.

Season passes are well worth it if you ski, you will love that part of it.

Swim in the Salt Lake at least once.

The mountains to the east and north are beautiful in the summer as well.

Logan, and the area around there are gorgeous too. Bear Lake, east of Logan, is a gorgeous lake and the swimming and all is good there. It is an incredibly deep lake and there might even be a MONSTER, ha haha in it. Many a trip there I remember as a child.

Hiking is good. Southern Utah is beautiful too. Canyonlands, hey, that is where I first smoked some whacky tobacky and what views there. Lots of tourist destinations and beautiful places to explore.

Good luck with the job hunt and good luck with everything else Windraven.

I went there but I was born in 1961.

I hear that Edith Bowen no longer exists.

I moved to Hyde Park in the 6th grade :grr:

That was a bad move, but we moved to Oklahoma when I was 15, which was hard too.

My parents were both from Oklahoma so it made sense to go there.

My dad had taught at Utah State for years and then went to Oklahoma State to run their Journalism and Broadcasting program.

I'd love to go up there again soon, I haven't gone in a few years. Probably have to wait until later in the season, though, I bet the water's still pretty chilly. Beautiful, beautiful lake/area.

there are places I'd rather not live

but if circumstances were that it was indeed worth the downside, I'd live just about anywhere.

Except Dallas Texas, damned hottest, flattest, ugliest place I can think of.

Besides, they killed Kennedy there, and that machine that did that is still in place down there a generation or two removed and more entrenched.

New York City, the congested parts of the NE around DC and NYC, Detroit, Atlanta (too big and too much traffic), as well as other cities like Atlanta in those areas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles.

Also, very small towns in any state.

I'm sure they're beautiful states, and I could visit them, but I couldn't live out in the middle of nowhere. Illinois is rural enough and even so, there are cities, airports, etc within an hour of where I live. I'd hate to live half a day from civilization.

90. Oh yeah...and keep going north on 395
up toward the NE corner of the state; Alturas, the White Mountains, the Madeleine Plains...beautiful country. Then over toward the coast; Fort Jones, Gasquet, Mad River.

We spent 10 days down in the Mammoth area a couple years back; Sherwin Creek, Fish Slough, Cowboy Tank Hot springs, Mono Lake.

I'll see if I can dig up some pictures.

My dad wad born about a century too late...meaning we spent just about every free weekend or vacation camping or backpacking somewhere. It took me until I got over about 45 to realize just how precious that opportunity was.

I was born, raised, and spent the first 37 years of my life there, but now that I'm living in Canada and a permanent resident (working on becoming a citizen), I know in my heart that this is the place I'm meant to be. It's truly home, and I'm never going to leave.

Now, if I can just get the freakin' corner stores and grocery stores to sell beer here, I'd have zero complaints! :D
