2. "Dicky Doo And The Don'ts"
:-)

Believe it or not, this was a real group in the '50s.

According to Dick Clark in his autobiography, Dicky Doo's manager came to his and asked for a suggestion for a group name. Dick said "Whatever you do, don't call them "Dicky Doo And The Don'ts"! But that's exactly what they did.

first, it's "hooters", not "the hooters".

second, the greatest rock concert marquees i ever saw was:

SQUEEZE
HOOTERS
THE TRUTH

honest, i saw this concert in austin around 1987. it was an excellent show, and the souvenir ticket is priceless!

10. He's great!
It's one guy, Jim Thirlwell. He routinely changes the name of the 'band' but always uses the word "Foetus" somewhere in the title.

Some incarnations, to add to your list:

Phillip and His Foetus Vibrations
Foetus Under Glass
Foetus Uber Frisco
You've Got Foetus on Your Breath
Foetus Art Terrorism
Foetus, Inc.
Foetus on the Beach

But he's just been, simply, "Foetus" since the early 90s.

21. Van Morrson - Dirt Bags
That's what Van Morrison wanted to call his first band back in Belfast circa 1962 - but the Musicians Union (too long a story) wouldn't give approval. So they chose "Them". First abstract name of a band as i recall. The Who came later.
Actually it was "DirtBegs" in Belfast dialect.

No one calls them that. It's either Velvet Underground, or you call them VU or, rarely, you might get away with The Underground, though I wouldn't suggest it.

If Lou Reed heard you, he'd put his guitar through your head. With feedback.

it's good enough for me. I think a lot more things I do would piss off Reed more than my calling the band, "The Velvets" EX: My vicious (but spot on) imitation of him asking Laurie Anderson to take care of small household repairs.

26. Neutral Milk Hotel
Jeff Magnum is responsible for one of the greatest records of all time (In the Aeroplane over the Sea); but it sounds like he got his band's name from the Beavis and Butt-head "band name generator."

Actually, perhaps he did. Focus on the music, and whatnot. Anyway, stupid name, great music.

On the stupid name, great music tangent, I submit:

The Beatles.

Come on, puns are really lame.

...just that he decided to step out of the limelight. If I'm not asking too much, are you in NYC? That's where he was last
"officially" seen.

Next time you see him, please let him know that Al Hedges (my nom de musique) considers "Aeroplane" the third greatest album ever.

40. The worst has to belong to a Boston area band called
Anal Cunt. And their "music" was horrible. I had to review a disc when I wrote for a local music magazine: the editor assigned it to me because I was the only one of the female writers who he thought could handle it. (He didn't want to give it to a male because he figured they'd get too juvenile, a la Beavis & Butt-head, about it.) lol

47. I like those names, esp They Might Be Giants
I also think Afghan Wigs (played with them once in W VA.), Lets Active ( a fave of mine), Chocolate Watchband, Strawberry Alarmclock, The Slits are cool names. You have to consider that for some of those bands, it was the sixties and psychedelic names were in. And then there was the "The" thing in the eighties, where every other band had a The in their name. Apparently this is coming back. Also think The Psychedelic Furs were a great name. Weird/obscure names are half the fun!

59. Oh, there are so many
Pretty much all rappers:

Snoop Doggy Dogg
Mamma Jammin' Ankle Fukcing Toad Biting DJ HammerMC My Man (or whatever)

I always really hated the name Psychedelic Furs. And Wham! is a great inclusion in the canon of idiotic band names.

KC and the Sunshine Band is an assramming kind of name.

Bachman Turner Overdrive - stupid name

Billy Joel(tm) - I know it's his real name, but, since he's trademarked it, it now counts as a band name, and it SUCKS! No rocker is called "Billy" you useless talentless fuck.

The Pretenders - bad name, becuase it fit their oeuvre: they pretended to make music. And it's just dumb.

Head East - really liked their music, but it's a dumb name.

Pure Prairie League - also saw them in concert, incredbily good, but a really stupid name.

Dr Hook - dumb name

Oh - just thought of one I also really hated always, Gary "U.S." Bonds. maybe if he hadn't felt the need to include that assinine "U.S." in the middle I wouldn't mind so much, and maybe if his music were interesting, but, the conjunction of that dumbnass "U.S." with this ear-infinite suckitude, leave me needing to include him on this list.

they broke a lot of new ground at the time. No they weren't the Clash, but it was really great to see a woman front a band at that time. And they also made a lot of good music... even if Rush stole some of it!
