Today In Twisted History
JANUARY 17

(When Americans) discover the sexual core of our psychological theories, they will drop us. Their prudery and their material dependence on the public are too great.

-- Sigmund Freud, letter to Carl Jung, today, 1909. (Jung agrees.)

1952: Larry Fortensky - who nobody in a gazillion years would ever peg as a future Mr. Elizabeth Taylor after meeting Liz in a rehab center - is born.

1977: Condemned man Gary Gilmore is executed in Utah by his method of choice: firing squad.

1991: Everybody gets very nervous about potential for World War III when Iraq retaliates for U.S. bombing by lobbing scud missiles into Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

5. Actually, Gary Gilmore *wanted* the death penalty.

That much I do remember.

I Remember as an 11-year old kid watching the coverage on the news while plaing with a toy tank that expanded into a battle control center with three mini-tanks That my Mom and Dad bought me For my Birthday. Desert Storm... I remeber the Trading cards, as well. We have a Hobby stroe in marinette that managed to get their hands a a metric shitload of the ones Pro Set put out three years ago. they still haven' sold them all yet. Hell, I bought, a few of 'em myself for trivia.

As For Gary Gilmore... I seem to remeber an old SNL bit where the cast sung a tasteless christmas carol called "We're Killing Gary Gilmore for Christmas" or some such thing.

BTW, You left out Benjamin Franklin's B-Day.

3. Wow, what a different perspective!
In '91, I was just over 29, and on the verge of dating a new interest (what a mistake that was! LOL). We'd "met" on the phone through friends, and when the SCUDs hit the fan, we agreed we'd better hurry up and meet in person, because nobody was sure this wasn't all going to turn into WWIII (which, in retrospect, would have been heaven compared to our ensuing relationship).

Day-umn! How could I forget Ben's b-day?! I feel like such a moran! Okay, in partial penance (paraphrased):

Those who would give up liberty for the sake of security deserve neither liberty nor security.
