OK - How much money have you spent on cosmetic procedures?
I went in for a consultation today and came out really wanting "the works" - which they quoted me at.......$10,000.

However, this is really the only way to make a very positive change in my appearance that I will be really really happy about. I've lost 50 pounds on my own, and I want these last fast pockets gone. I have some nice muscle - from running and pilates, but right now it's under some fat layers that will never come off unless I go down to a skeletal weight.

Is it too much to spend? I would rather have this than a new car or just about anything.

1. Speaking as somebody who laments the need for $6 shampoo
If you really want it and you can afford it, get it.

Obviously it matters to you if you went in for the consult and you've put the effort in to lose all that weight and tone up. I'd never do it in a million years, but if this matters to you there's no virtue in self-denial for no real reason.

2. If you can afford it and really want it, do it.
I have never spent much on cosmetic improvements, but that's mainly because I'm pretty much beyond help and I'm old enough now that it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference in my life anyhow. I yam what I yam.

But if you'll be happier if you look better, what the hell -- go for it.

4. Zero
I doubt I'd ever spend any. The only instance I can think of is if I had breast cancer and wanted reconstruction. I can sit here now and say I would just wear a falsie bra like my great aunt but if it really happened that could change.

13. It would depend.
I don't go for local anesthetic. I need to not see what's going on down there.

Plus, I'll probably need to be deflated in some areas, inflated in others, clipped, stitched, and blindfolded. Much more work than you, I'm sure. :)

6. Go for it!
If it's something you want and can afford...do it. I had some stuff done years ago and I'm glad I did. If I had more disposable income (once the kids are out of college)...I'd like to do more.

8. Please just make sure you do a lot of research before you pick a surgeon
If you can afford it go for it but make sure you go into it with as much information as you can get.

Congratulations on losing 50 lb. That's a huge accomplishment.

since the age of 13...

If it makes a huge difference to you...it is worth it.

pshah!

You should do whatever makes you happy. If you've got the money and want to spend it in that manner, go for it. You've worked hard; if surgery is the frosting on your cake, no one should dissuade you from having it. I'm sure you'll weigh your options thoughtfully.

17. $10,000.
$10,000 for a tummy tuck to get rid of the fat roll I had just below my waist.

If I have any more cosmetic surgery in the future, it would be liposuction, because I have a serious inability to lose weight like normal people, due to my hypothyroidism.

19. You've lost 50 lbs on your own, yet
"this is really the only way to make a very positive change in my appearance that I will be really really happy about"

As a professional, I have to ask who exactly said this: "right now it's under some fat layers that will never come off unless I go down to a skeletal weight."

23. I couldn't do it
Spend a week or two volunteering on the gulf coast or somewhere more exotic, for $250.

http://www.adventuretravelabroad.com/listingsp3.cfm/listing/731

There is something about that kind of experience that helps you lose your ego and focus on things that are more important. I got things I'd love to magically change in myself. Heck, I don't think there's any physical part of myself I wish WASN'T changed. But $10,000 ... that's enough to keep Emergency Communities in Buras, Louisiana open for 2.5 months.

In those imaginary scenarios that play out in my head, I can't picture saying "well, sure, I COULD have provided an entire town with potable water and laundry facilities for a summer, but I think I'd feel better about myself if instead of that, I had this extra flap of skin and fat removed."

24. But if your fat is endangering your health, you don't have enough energy for doing good deeds.
It's not always just cosmetic, it's for your health, if it is to take off fat.

26. Taking off fat is for your health AND making you look better.
At least for the extra pounds I've got, and the tummy tuck I already had.

Some folks just don't understand. Some of us that are fat are not overeaters. We have a very slow metabolism and I have a dead thyroid. I take Armour Thyroid every day and have since I was 11 years old. That was 41 years ago.

That is common and usually undiagnosed in America.

27. ? Your situation seems unrelated to the OP or my comment
You sound like you've taken issue with something I've said about the causes of being overweight, which is curious since I've neither said nor implied anything about causes whatsoever - nor have I been talking about people whose health is impacted by their weight.

I was replying to the OP, who phrased their OWN situation (not yours) as cosmetic, not health-related. When a person starts talking about wanting to lose so much fat tissue that they would be into "skeletal" territory if they lost it without surgery, I don't assume they are medically overweight.
