Student governemnt sucks.
Today we had student government nominations. Well, I've never been an avid fan of the SG, so I decided to take an anarchist route to things. We had open nominations, so of course the skinny little preppy girls and the jock boys nominated themselves, along with one or two stoners. And I knew that, like the year before, nothing good would come of it. Because of the SG, nothing has been going right in our school. It's just party and dance and party and dance. The real purpose of the SG is to listen to their fellow ASB and make decisions on it. Of course, no one does. And I'm fed up with it.

So I started to whisper to everyone around me. Nominate your self, I told them. Do it. And it worked.

We have five positions open, usually with only one or two people running per place.

We have forty-five people running now. It's complete and total anarchy. And I laugh, because the staff put all their trust in us and look what happened. I think it's the only and best way to get them to abolish this stupid thing they call 'Student Government'.

1. It only gets worse from here.
Student governments are increasingly pompous and futile, the higher up the education scale you go.

5. Excellent.
:P

Now you must encourage support for the unlikeliest candidates and/or create an underground political party.

10. You should organize a ticket under an acronym. Try F.U.C.K.
:P

8. Haha, it wouldn't be for about 6 months and it isn't set in stone...
...but I've been e-mailing him intermittently for about a month about this and that and I'm going to start seeing if he'll take me on once I get my driver's license. I'll be SO EXCITED if I can actually do it. A year of study with him before college would be SO GOOD.

:woohoo:

Check your PM. ;)

4. As a former member of the Univ. of Texas student government...
Edited on Tue May-22-07 06:09 PM by Writer
may I say that it truly depends on where you are? UT is a large campus - 50,000 students. During the one year I served, our SG opened up one of the libraries into a 24-hour study area, made sure that handicapped individuals had more parking space access, co-created the first student-run simulcast at UT, distributed nearly $10,000 in appropriation funds to various student organizations, while operating a campus-wide walk-buddy program (rape prevention) and pushed for funding to erect a statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. And that was just in the year I served.

Here was the thanks we got: a group of ultra-right wing students on campus formulated a ticket in the next SG election claiming that student fees were wasted because we "didn't do anything," seeking to abolish the SG. :eyes: Needless to say, they didn't do very well.

Some of those folks that are now running - maybe they can get elected and actually do something worthwhile?

6. Well, I'm in a little highschool that's run by idiots.
Nothing at all cool like what you had done is what they accomplished. We only have idiots who want to spend the whole ASB fund on a cruise.

9. LOL - hey, I hear you.
My high school was similar. The best we got was off-campus lunch. :P

I suppose I'm trying to give you an example of something that works so you don't lose ALL faith.

Good luck on your mission! :hi:

13. At our high school, we had to take out a petition
And get 10-15 signatures before being places on the ballot. Then we voted on paper ballots.

14. That is fucking awesome.
It would never happen at my school, though. A while back, there was a kid who got detention for something that wasn't really his fault and EVERYONE was talking about how unfair it was, and yet nobody would show up at the detention to protest. Even though they thought it was enough of a big deal to complain about for days and days. :eyes:

15. Tell me about it
the USG at Ohio State is a waste of space and money. No one gives a damn about elections, because A: we have more important things to worry about and B: they never get anything done as it is.
