Does anyone else have to keep their toilet paper
Edited on Mon May-21-07 08:39 PM by caty
in a decorative wooden box? One of our cats, Miss Kitty, has been eating the toilet paper. She bites out chunks of it and eats them. We stopped her for awhile by draping a cover over the roll. But, she figured out she could go underneath the cover and chomp away. So, last night we took the holder off of the wall. Hung a nice little picture there and put a small table there with a wooden box on it. The toilet paper is now kept in that wooden box. A little inconvenient, but not much.

I hope she doesn't discover the paper towels in the kitchen!

Bad, bad Miss Kitty...

Has anyone else had to make any "modifications" around the house because of their cat?

1. I have to be careful of ALL MOVABLE OBJECTS
my cat Riff Raff makes a toy out of ANYTHING THAT MOVES.....I work 12 hour shifts and am constantly annoyed that I am missing my chapstick, fingernail clippers, Visine - he fishes them out of my purse and I find them later under cabinets. :(

2. It's kind of the opposite at my house -- they give me stuff.
At various times I've found cat toys in my purse, backpack, camera bag and shoes. One day at work I was rummaging in my purse for something and found a catnip mouse. My co-workers were highly amused.

9. OMG ocelot
Riff Raff dumps his cat toys and bottle caps into my purse - I was at Kohls looking for a quarter in the bottom of my purse and I pulled out a chewed-up mouse toy by the tail - even though it was bright orange the cashier screamed. :o

23. I had a cat
who would bring in acorns from outside, bat them around the house and when he was finished, drop them in my shoes. I had to empty my shoes out every morning. ;)

I miss that cat. :(

6. She hasn't stolen anything
from my purse yet, but I have one that is soft leather that she and Bogie like to nap on.

4. No, but we have to close the door
After waking up to a golden retriever puppy happily munching on toilet paper strung from the bathroom into my office.

5. I'm close to getting child proof locks where my kitchen trash is
Max can open the cabinet, pull out the metal sliding thing the trash can is on, and get stuff out from under the lid (one of those lids that swings both ways). Takes him about 15 seconds and he's quiet. Right now I'm just putting something heavy in front of the cabinet if there's chicken bones in the trash so he doesn't harm himself. Probably cheaper to get a new trash can but I'd have to get a latched lid.

16. I put my 'attractive nuisance' garbage in the freezer
I kill two birds with one stone; if there is a frozen food bag that has remnants of sauce or something in it so it can't be recycled w/o washing it, I use it as a freezer garbage bag, clipping it closed with a clothespin. Anything that my dog would smell and get out of the kitchen waste basket goes in there, including cheese and butter wrappings. Once a week I fasten the bag with a twist tie and put it in the trash can to be picked up the next a.m.. We compost all the veg. and fruit garbage, so the big outdoor garbage can never smells bad, either, especially nice in the summer when meat scraps & bones would get pretty stinky!

7. One of our cats figured out how to spring the tp roll off the spindle
and he drags it out all over the house throughout the night, clearly frolicking and tearing it apart so it's a virtual snow day inside by the time we wake up.

So now, we too have an explanation taped to the space on the wall, between the two ends of the toilet paper holder, where the paper used to hang, directing them to get the toilet paper out of the drawer of the vanity.

I tried to put the tp back on the spindle after a year of keeping it in the drawer and he was right back at what is clearly his most favorite toy evah!

And thank god he hasn't discovered the paper towels... sheesh, I hadn't thought about that - he is so smart, I hope he isn't lurking over my shoulder reading your post and getting bad ideas!

just had a good laugh over your post. At least we are not the only ones having to come up with unique ideas to avoid those toilet paper problems.

11. Sometimes I think that Bogie and Miss Kitty
have meetings to discuss their next annoyance. They seem to take turns in who is going to be the most mischievous. Bogie has learned how to knock on doors and goes through spells of waking us up in the middle of the night doing this. Just when he seemed to take a break and stop doing that, Miss Kitty discovers the toilet paper. I think they are plotting against us. :scared:

Bogie, the door knocker:

12. We can't leave a glass of water or any other drink unattended.
Nigel will tip them over to watch them spill. I've gotten so used to always picking up my drink and carrying it with me wherever I go that without thinking I do that when I'm visiting others, too.

13. Mr, Meow Meow...
or "PV" as we've nicknamed him, (for "full of piss and vinegar") does something to my Cokes when I'm gone. No matter where I leave it, when I come over, he's spilled it. I always figured that he tried to take a drink and tipped it over.

Now you have me wondering if perhaps he is doing what your kitty does. :)

14. He might be. I've watched mine. He never drinks it. I think he likes to watch it spill.
He'll hook his paw around the rim and pull it down, and then just sit there and stare at it. Every cat I've ever had had their one peculiar habit unique to them. I'm waiting to see what my new kitten Baxter's will be :)

15. You know, I think that you might be right!
Mr. Meow Meow also accompanies me to the bathroom. He sits patiently by my feet, then when I flush, and walk to the lavatory, he jumps up on the toilet seat and watches the water go down the toilet drain. He's a silly cat.

So you may be right...I think he likes to watch water dribble or drain.

18. Might want to consider changing brands
There must be something irresistible about that paper.

I had a cat once who thought it was high comedy to spill an entire roll onto the floor by pawing the roll with his forefeet.

20. I can't deal with cats. So I don't have any. No dogs either.
Although I like dogs. I am very allergic to both cats and dogs, although more allergic to cats.

Problem solved.

22. My cat sees toilet paper and paper towel rolls as a worthy adversary.
At times, she attacks them as if she's attacking prey.

24. Back when I had plants I used to use gallon milk jugs
so the water can sit and become suitable for watering. I had three of them on the back porch and noticed one of them was knocked over. I didn't think much of it when it happened again a couple of days later! I finally caught the cat actually pulling the milk jug over one day. So I just took a little bungee cord and bound them all together by the handle and that fixed that! His name was Milo...my ex got custody of him.:-(

25. A previous cat would unroll the toilet paper across the cat box
She would sit on her haunches in the catbox after doing her business, and since the box was between the toilet and the wall in the bathroom, she would use the roll like a treadmill with her front paws, and unroll about 15-20 feet of paper before strolling away. Nice zigzag pattern on top of the catbox.

26. My cat likes to play with rolls of toilet paper, unroll the paper, bite and chew, etc.
Also with napkins. I have to keep the napkin holder away from her.

28. I've been lucky.
I've never had that problem with any of the cats who have owned me. Seems a little odd, because that seems to be a common problem for cat "owners."
