What does bad raw chicken smell like?
As in, straight from the store in an AC'd car to the fridge? What's bad, what's normal? I think we're paranoid b/c we went to a different store that we never went to before...

:hi:

3. To me, it smelled like something, but nothing I would
consider 'rotten', per se. Hmmmm. Thanks though!

2. If in doubt, throw it out!
That was my mantra when I worked at the Poison Control Center at Grady Hospital in Atlanta.

6. I know....I'm not really in doubt actually
Sniffa has an xtra sensitive nose, and detests raw meat. I think it's just him. We shall see... :P

4. Throw it out.
It smells horrific when it's bad, but if you're uncertain, throw it out.

17. Sniffa may be reacting to the smell of packaged a wee bit too long, as opposed to spoiled.
If you're planning to use it in a well cooked dish, fine. If you were planning on broiling or grilling don't expect a nice flavor. Off is off.

When I was first lived in Boston and had to do some serious penny pinching, I'd stock up at Johnny's Food Disaster in Cambridge. The meat there always smelled old. The chicken had a slightly gamey smell but cooked thoroughly in soup or baked with wine and onions it tasted fined. When we broiled it, it was not very good. Didn't have a grill in Slumerville.

Still, there's always the chance that the chicken is bad. Hard to tell without smelling it myself.

5. It would stink to high heaven. Think rancid. Think what is that smell in
my fridge that wafts through the house everytime I open the fridge door? It stinks that badly.

7. Oh, wow. You just brought back a very vivid memory.
when my dad was in the hospital in 2004, I spent every lunch hour with him for a week. When he got out, I returned to my normal routine.

The first day, I went into the garage to get something out of the fridge for lunch. The smell was unbelievable. The fridge had died and not only was everything in it melted or warm, the meats were all rotten.

WHen the guys from Lowe's came later that day to bring me a new fridge, the guy said "Ma'am, that is without question the stinkiest fridge I've ever removed".

11. The more time you've got the package open with your noses
pressed against it, the worse it's going to get. Throw that sucka on the grill!

/in seriousness - once you get paranoid nothing will change your mind. If it was bad, you'd know. Cook thoroughly, use a food themometer to make sure its at least 160 degs F, and you'll be fine.

13. Just cook the hell out of it and use lots of garlic. Only if you're pretty sure it's fine though.
If you have doubts don't chance it. But if you're 99.9% sure cooking it with lots of garlic will help.

22. If raw chicken goes bad, you'll know about it.
There's nothing subtle about the stench of rotten chicken.

That's spoiled chicken-- things like salmonella contamination don't have any odor.
