A Chicago police officer who was attacked by a pit bull on the South Side this morning accidentally shot a person while the officer was trying to shoot the dog, authorities said.

Around 3 a.m., two officers responded to a 911 call of a domestic disturbance in a residence near 73rd Street and Hoyne Avenue in the city's West Englewood neighborhood, police said.

One of the officers "went to shoot the pit bull, and the bullet ricocheted and hit the individual in the foot," said police spokesman Pat Camden.
