Has anyone ever used a Neti pot for sinus issues?
Edited on Thu May-17-07 10:13 AM by movie_girl99
My son suffers from allergies and sinus issues. He takes Claritin and uses a saline nasal spray but some one told me about these Neti pots. Any info would be appreciated.

1. Yes, I think they are great.
I have a couple of friends who use them too and swear by them.

It's not as hard as it looks to use them and they really do help.

2. Dr. Oz talked about it on Oprah
He said it was a good idea, only that you should add a little salt to the warm water, since the water in your body is saline.

3. I do, daily.
It's made a huge difference in my sinus health. It was easy to learn how to use. I do it as part of my morning shower routine.

In peak allergy season, it helps to flush the allergens out of my sinuses, and it does a good job of keeping my chronic sinus infections at bay.

You can make your own saline rinse at home. I make a blend of 2 parts salt to 1 part baking soda. I store it in an airtight container in the bathroom, and mix a teaspoon or so with approx. 12 oz of warm-to-touch tapwater.

8. Me too. My pulmonologist (sleep doctor) recommended it
I have sleep apnea, and use a CPAP machine at night. Consequently, my sinuses get a little messy and I get congested easily.

I like the fact that it's pre-mixed, and all you have to do is add distilled water, and you're good to go.

6. I started using one for the first time this winter
and this was the first winter I didn't have to turn to antibiotics for a sinus infection. Highly recommended!

7. Feels kinda funny
the first time, but the results are worth it! You can also create a basic saline rinse with 1/4 a teaspoon of iodine-free kosher salt. Whatever you do, DO NOT use salt with the added iodine. It's far too drying and it hurts. Most grocery stores have kosher salt, and it works great.

9. My sister uses one all the time.
:) She has a lot of allergies and sinus issues, and it's helped a lot. She gave me one as a gift, and it works wonders when I have a cold. Fortunately, that's not very often, but I have a NetiPot when I need it. :)

10. Yes
It really helps when you have that itchy nose thing. Nothing beats it.

11. Yes. In fact, I should use it more often.
I've found it to be helpful, though it does feel a little weird at first.

12. I got something at the pharmacy that does the same thing.
I think it was called a Nasaline something-or-other, and they sold a solution to go with it (basically the same water plus salt and baking soda that my doctor had told me to make).

Anyway, it looks like a giant (really) plastic syringe. Fill it up with warm solution, hold your head over the sink, and use the plunger slowly.

It did a pretty good job and was very easy to use and to clean.

15. I've heard you should be careful with those because you can accidentally force
too much pressure into your sinuses using the syringe. The neti pot uses gravity only. But I'm sure it's fine if you're careful though.

14. You can get them at most health food stores, or the folks there will know where
you can get them. In fact, I just googled and found them on Amazon.

They look funny and feel weird but they work.

16. Definitely make sure he understands that it's going to feel weird at first, like
when you get water in your sinuses while swimming. But it really does help. In fact, I was just thinking today that I should get mine out. My sinuses are feeling a little funky.
