I met a fellow today whose first name is Dung
And all the time we spoke, one overriding thought ran through my mind: "Dung is a shitty sounding name".

Ba-dum-dum.

1. I used to work with a guy named Dung. I also worked with someone named Phuoc Ngo!
You can guess how it's pronounced and you are probably right.

17. The name is actually pronounced Yoong
Edited on Thu May-17-07 10:52 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
I knew two Vietnamese with that name when I was in graduate school. One was named "My Dung," pronounced "Mee yoong."

Look up the Vietnamese language some time. Many things are not pronounced as you would expect.

6. you think that's bad?
I shit you not, a friend had a classmate named Hu Flung Dung, just like the joke. One of the Linux gurus who works with our computer consultants is named Dr. Hu. And someone else I know worked with a Phuc Yu. There's also a great little restaurant here...

I can just imagine the advertising campaign. "So, where do you want to eat tonight?" "Aw, Phucket!" If I ever opened a chinese restaurant, I'd call it "Phu King's Good Chinese Restaurant." Is it good? It's Phu King good.

I think the WORST name I ever saw in terms of terrible meanings in English was not asian but Jewish. This kid was in my scout troop. I forget how you spelled his first name, it was something like Anyl or Aynal but you pronounced it "anal." Last name? Gore. Wow.

I just wonder which would be the worst language for my name to be pronounced in.

Folks in the Lounge eat this kind of stuff up. At least it gives them something to do.

24. OK, you do make a good point. But do you notice how quickly the childish (and
mildly racist) chuckling and "nudge, nudge, wink wink" stops when someone points it out?

I like the Lounge. It's a place to relax and be goofy now and again. And I don't want to come across as some kind of Puritan Moral Authoritarian.

I'ts just that Hee hee hee your name is spelled like a word that means "poop" in our language is just too sixth-grade and Bevis-and-Butthead for even the Lounge...just in my opinion, of course. (And I actually kinda liked Beavis and Butthead.)

It's a discussion forum. If someone has an opinion that it's hilarious that an Asian man has the first name "Dung," that's fine. If my opinion is that it's really tacky to say that, well, I can express that as well.

Not a big deal in any case.

26. I noticed that too
Kinda surprised me. Maybe there's hope yet. :p Apparently I'm goofy pretty much all the time, or so my friends tell me, but I am also sensitive to certain things and this is one of them. I had a bad experience here and haven't totally trusted the Lounge since so I don't visit much and rarely post. But I see your point as well and if ur having a good time here, then enjoy:thumbsup: I'll never say that there aren't some some good folks who post here.

10. We have a Phuket Thai in Honolulu, too!
no, it isn't a chain; as we all learned after the tsunami, Phuket is the name of a southern Thai beach resort. I'm sure many different cities have "Hong Kong Gardens" or the like, too, all unrelated.

The guy who took me there, who is Lao and knows the staff, patiently explained to me that the 'h' is silent; thus, it is pronounced "Poo-ket". A measurable improvement, at any rate. :P

7. There is a large grocery store near our home named "A Dong"
Mostly Asian food - Chinese and Vietnamese.

But, I wonder if the owner's knew the irony of naming their grocery store after a slang word for penis.

Edited on Thu May-17-07 10:09 PM by Redstone
that sounds or is spelled like "Brad" meant "asswipe" or "foreskin?"

Bet YOU wouldn't like people making fun of your name like you're making fun of this guy's name, would you?

Edited to clarify that I am NOT implying that I think you're an asswipe or a foreskin, just asking how you'd feel.

18. I agree, especially since these names aren't pronounced like the English words
Did you know, for example, that the name of Tom Cruise's daughter Suri means "pickpocket" in Japanese?

22. Redstone, I've been down this path with the Lounge folks before
They're not going to buy any criticism of this. It's just harmless fun in their minds. And to use a phrase that they can immediately relate to, we are pissing in their Cheerios so we might as well move on and leave them to it.

27. I went to school with a kid
Whose first name was "Dong". I gather that's not uncommon for Chinese, but the poor guy came in for his share of ragging. Not as bad as the boy whose last name was "Fuchs" though.

It runs both ways. My last name is a common one in English (and no, I'm not going to tell you what it is) but it means something insulting in Spanish. It sometimes resembles that old Monty Python routine about the "Git Family" when I introduce myself to a native Spanish speaker: you can see him trying to keep a straight face while cracking up inside.

28. I once met a woman who had the Finnish last name of Ahola
She went to Japan and found out that the Japanese pronunciation of her last name means "gang of idiots."

Some people I knew in Portland unknowingly gave their daughter a name that is also the name of the slummiest part of Tokyo.

The American pronunciation of the name "Connie" sounds like the Japanese word for "crab," while "Donnie" sounds like the Japanese word for "tick" (the insect).
