I shit you not, a friend had a classmate named Hu Flung Dung, just like the joke. One of the Linux gurus who works with our computer consultants is named Dr. Hu. And someone else I know worked with a Phuc Yu. There's also a great little restaurant here...



I can just imagine the advertising campaign. "So, where do you want to eat tonight?" "Aw, Phucket!" If I ever opened a chinese restaurant, I'd call it "Phu King's Good Chinese Restaurant." Is it good? It's Phu King good.

I think the WORST name I ever saw in terms of terrible meanings in English was not asian but Jewish. This kid was in my scout troop. I forget how you spelled his first name, it was something like Anyl or Aynal but you pronounced it "anal." Last name? Gore. Wow.

I just wonder which would be the worst language for my name to be pronounced in.

I like the Lounge. It's a place to relax and be goofy now and again. And I don't want to come across as some kind of Puritan Moral Authoritarian.

I'ts just that Hee hee hee your name is spelled like a word that means "poop" in our language is just too sixth-grade and Bevis-and-Butthead for even the Lounge...just in my opinion, of course. (And I actually kinda liked Beavis and Butthead.)

It's a discussion forum. If someone has an opinion that it's hilarious that an Asian man has the first name "Dung," that's fine. If my opinion is that it's really tacky to say that, well, I can express that as well.

no, it isn't a chain; as we all learned after the tsunami, Phuket is the name of a southern Thai beach resort. I'm sure many different cities have "Hong Kong Gardens" or the like, too, all unrelated.

The guy who took me there, who is Lao and knows the staff, patiently explained to me that the 'h' is silent; thus, it is pronounced "Poo-ket". A measurable improvement, at any rate. :P

Whose first name was "Dong". I gather that's not uncommon for Chinese, but the poor guy came in for his share of ragging. Not as bad as the boy whose last name was "Fuchs" though.

It runs both ways. My last name is a common one in English (and no, I'm not going to tell you what it is) but it means something insulting in Spanish. It sometimes resembles that old Monty Python routine about the "Git Family" when I introduce myself to a native Spanish speaker: you can see him trying to keep a straight face while cracking up inside.
