What song should be the national anthem?
"The Star Spangled Banner" is too hard to sing. We need a new song. What would you choose?

1. "To Anachreon In Heaven".
What this country needs is a good old-fashioned drinking song.

And we wouldn't even have to learn a new tune. B-)

"America, the Beautiful" extolls the goodness of this country. Not some damn war song like "The Star Spangled Banner"

7. America the Beautiful
O beautiful for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountains' majesty
Above the fruited plain
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea

this atheist does not care about the reference to god

this song should be the national anthem

we don't need a song about WAR to represent us

15. Agree with everything you said
Plus The Star-Spangled Banner has an awful melody.

And it's a song about war and a flag fer crissakes. Not about our country.

For those with more traditional tastes, America the Beautiful really is a lovely song, and easy to sing.

17. Some might say Springsteen's "Born in the USA"
I'd prefer "Born to Run." A couple of teenage lovers on a date they're not supposed to be on, hiding from their friends, driving in a car at night with the radio turned up loud and glorious love making at the end of the road... Now, ain't that America?

But a lot of America's most valuable inhabitants weren't. A good national anthem needs to be inclusive.

23. Little Pink Houses! Here's the original video, one of my favorites!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q17h75pMQ4

There's a black man with a black cat
Livin' in a black neighborhood
He's got an interstate
Runnin' through his front yard
You know he thinks that he's got it so good
And there's a woman in the kitchen
Cleanin' up the evenin' slop
And he looks at her and says, hey darlin'
I can remember when you could stop a clock

Oh, but ain't that America
For you and me
Ain't that America
Something to see, baby
Ain't that America
Home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses
For you and me
Oooh, yeah
For you and me

Well, there's a young man in a t-shirt
Listenin' to a rockin' rollin' station
He's got greasy hair, greasy smile
He says, Lord this must be my destination
'Cause they told me when I was younger
Said boy, you're gonna be president
But just like everything else
Those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went

Oh, but ain't that America
For you and me
Ain't that America
Something to see, baby
Ain't that America
Home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses
For you and me
Oooh, little baby
For you and me

Well, there's people and more people
What do they know, know, know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico
Ooh, yeah
And there's winners and there's losers
But they ain't no big deal
'Cause the simple man, baby
Pays for thrills
The bills the pills that kill

Oh, but ain't that America
For you and me
Ain't that America
Something to see, baby
Ain't that America
Home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses
For you and me
Oooh
Ooooh, yeah...

35. For the working class:
I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay
Aint it sad
And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me
Thats too bad
In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldnt have to work at all, Id fool around and have a ball...

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich mans world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich mans world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
Its a rich mans world

A man like that is hard to find but I cant get him off my mind
Aint it sad
And if he happens to be free I bet he wouldnt fancy me
Thats too bad
So I must leave, Ill have to go
To las vegas or monaco
And win a fortune in a game, my life will never be the same...

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich mans world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich mans world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
Its a rich mans world

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich mans world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich mans world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
Its a rich mans world

Its a rich mans world

But you better not try 'n' use those rights,
Cause you might get shot by me...

It's such a simple (simplistic) song that it's easy to come up with fake lyrics...

41. Will no one else say it? All right, I will then.
Just a small town girl, livin in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin anywhere
Just a city boy, born and raised in south detroit
He took the midnight train goin anywhere

A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

(chorus)

Dont stop believin
Hold on to the feelin
Streetlight people
