Poll question: Dune- the De Laurentiis or the Sci Fi Channel version?
Or, to put it another way: The letter of the law, or the spirit?

I have both versions, and I'm the first to admit they both have plusses and minuses. The original adheres closely to the details of the book, and that's part of what makes it the lesser choice IMO.

The John Hurt remake is, I believe, the superior rendering of the tale. It takes for granted the audience has probably read the book and thus they are free to dispense with a lot of the trivialities. It's a cleaner story, better acted, and far more interesting in its character development of all the players. Granted, the production values are a bit, shall we say, second rate- some sets are WAY too over-used, and the sound stage desert scenes are more than a bit obvious.

But I don't care.

Other films have also been remade to great effect- Star Wars, for instance, and Blade Runner.

It's a personal choice, but I believe my suspension of disbelief is great enough I can sit back and enjoy either version of Dune. However, in this case I simply prefer the spirit to the letter.
