I have a knack for lyrics, I can pick them up on one listen to a song. Amazes the hell out of my buddy.
This brings up an interesting dilemma. While I don't really care about lyrics to songs as much as I do the melody and music within a song (I worry more about what each instrument is doing before worrying about the words, which might be why I pick up lyrics so damn fast), I am very aware of the meaning behind words and thus am having a hard time chosing a "first dance" song. While most people pick songs they like without regard to what the song is
saying, I tend to be anal about what the words of the song I choose might say. I don't know if everyone thinks like this, if its normal or compeletely music-snobbish.
For example, I know there are cases of people using songs like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
Ill be watching you
creepy
and there are people who used Garth Brooks' "The Dance", beautiful song no doubt but it features these lyrics:
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
basically, a song predicting the split-up at the wedding reception!
So, anyway, again, maybe I am being anal. But I just want to see what you guys think of this song. I am very set on trying to aviod the cliche songs.
If you don't know "The Answer", you can watch it on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NiP1vz7LKAsomeone set it to a video they made with clips from some soap opera or something.
Here are the lyrics:
I will be the answer
At the end of the line
I will be there for you
While you take the time
In the burning of uncertainty
I will be your solid ground
I will hold the balance
If you can't look down
If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all gone out
You'll still be burning so bright
Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind
Take me to a
Place so holy
That I can wash this from my mind
The memory of choosing not to fight
If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
'Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all burned out
You'll still be burning so bright
Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind
Mainly, its some of the imagery of rough times that have me concerned. Especially the last line, "For the night has been unkind". In one way it reads almost like wedding vows, with promises to stick it out through tough times that might come up; but on the other it seems like it could be about a rocky relationship. What are your thoughts, DU?
