A Russellville man was arrested Saturday after his girlfriend and her daughter were treated at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center for injuries he allegedly caused.
James Steven Cantrell, 20, faces charges of aggravated assault of a family member after his girlfriend’s 20-month-old child was treated at the emergency room for bruises on her back and forehead. Cantrell was ordered held on $250,000 bond and to stay away from the child and mother.
According to testimony given by Detective Rowdy Sweet during Monday morning’s bond hearing, the child’s mother sustained injuries to her ribs, while the child sustained bruises on her forehead and back along with red marks on her neck. Sweet said Cantrell admitted he hit the baby but said he struck her on the back of the head, which caused her to allegedly hit her forehead on the bathtub. Cantrell told Sweet he and the mother were trying to potty train the child. Cantrell said he squeezed her stomach so hard he believed he damaged her internally, according to testimony. The child then produced a dirty diaper, and Cantrell smeared the contents on her face, Sweet said.
The child’s mother said Cantrell grabbed the child by the neck and dropped her, Sweet said. Cantrell admitted he grabbed her by the neck but allegedly said his hand was under her bottom. Cantrell also allegedly told Sweet he had wrapped the child in a blanket and tied her with a belt to keep her still so he could sleep.
The child was taken from her mother by Department of Human Services on the basis she failed to protect her child.
