Woolworths used to have a damn fine coffeeshop
But they went belly up in the sun, maybe it was all the psychos that hung out there that did them in.

7. In Nancy Griffith's song "Love at the Five & Dime"....
She described the Woolworth's smell as "popcorn and chewin' gum, rubbed around together on the bottom of a leather-soled shoe."

An excellent song, too. :-)

8. We had a big Woolworths downtown on Main Street.
They had three places to eat at one time.

A sad part of American history was that the upstairs eating places were for only white people, the downstairs for black people.

I still remember my Aunt taking me downtown when I was very small and I couldn't understand why we couldn't eat downstairs.

13. I kind of miss Woolworth's

IMO, the coolest of their coffee shops was in the Cherry Hill Mall here in New Jersey. It was called the "Cherry Hill Grill", and it wasn't actually inside the store; instead, it was across from it, inside the actual mall. You'd sit down at the counter, and you'd actually look down and watch the cooks make your order. The last time I was at that mall, naturally the Woolworth's was gone, and the grill had become some trendy, overpriced "bistro". :(

Edit: I found this picture of it, from back in the 60s. It didn't really look like this when I used to go there.

14. I loved their breakfast
Sitting at the counter watching the sausage, eggs, and pancakes cooking, while two feet away was a pie safe full of cavities and tooth decay, ymmm.
