I say in all honestly that I am quite sure the freeper/Jesus-Crispy Republican party is done.
I'm an avid letter to the editor reader - it's the first thing I read when I get the paper, and about the only part that I really care about (except the comics and the Food section and Ms. Manners on Sundays).

I have noticed, in the last two years, a significant - and I say that with emphatic asterixes - **significant** - drop off in reasoned Republican letters; that is, letters from the old school Republicans.

All it is now is leftist leanings letters, most of which are literate and well spoken, some of which read like the insane rantings of organic malnourished paranoid marxists, and freeper letters, which are mostly illiterate, poorly reasoned, and filled with unrelated soundbytes.

I take this as the sign that the intelligent Republicans, the old school ones from pre-Reagan, are fed up and sick and tired of the current party and current political process. They have nothing to say because they know they've been betrayed by idiots and morons and Jesus Crispies who want to destroy the world.

I think the good republicans realize that either the Democrats are their only real hope, or that they have to kick all the Jesus Crispies and hate-based assholes out of their party, and take it back to a pre-Reagan sensibility.

I have high hopes, and high confidence that, unless the Dems totally fuck up the next election (which they certainly can - they're good at fucking up), the republicans have as much chance of winning the election as a bacon-wrapped canape has of getting past Oprah or Rosie O'Donnel at a cocktail party. "No, don't put toothpicks in 'em, or Oprah will need surgery".

Totally uncalled-for insults to Oprah and Rosie aside, I truly do think that the current Republican party, the unholy marriage of fiscal/social conservatives with fundamentalist Jesus Crispy assholes and fuckbags, is done. Totally fucking done.

And for that, I am happy.

1. I hope you are right.
Here in this red state; there are still several Republican ltte every Sunday in my local paper--but not as many as there used to be. I've seen equal number of well and poorly-written ones.
I think my southern neighbors just REALLY don't want to admit when they are wrong. Stubbornness runs high in our blood, unfortunately.
I do think they know they were wrong, though. Mostly, it seems many here are just avoiding the topics all together.

2. I hope you're right
It's so depressing, our own conservatives look across the Atlantic and get erections at how right wing the Republicans are. They just think we should follow everything that happens in America, even though the results of all this ultra-right-wing-fuck-the-poor politics is now laid bare for all to see.

3. I think your right

The winds of change have blown in on the laundry list of Bush fuck-ups and scandals.

The Democrats aren't good at down and dirty, and that's what worries me.

4. Don't you believe it
They are built on fear, hate, jealousy and ignorance.
Like cancer, these things are rarely eradicated. They
may be held in check for a while, suppressed, but the
freak cells that cause cancer, they can lurk and metastasize
and break out in all their ugly fury just when you thought
you were free of them.

Besides that, look what the Dark Side said about us 5 years ago....

6. You underestimate the conservative movement
Edited on Sun May-06-07 04:48 PM by Hardhead
They will suffer in the next several elections, but they aren't going anywhere. The republican presidential candidates are already rallying around the memory of St. Ronnie of Raygun, an implicit repudiation of the Boy Blunder. Their meme going forward is going to be that Dubya and the Neocons didn't represent true conservatism, and that therefore their ideas are still valid. They're like Terminators - they never fucking give up.

But we are fortunate that they are badly divided, turning on eachother, and losing credibility. The only thing still propping them up is our failed national news media. People like Russert and Tweety and Broder will continue to fellate them openly and enthusiastically. But we will make some gains in the next two election cycles. And yes, the presidency is ours to lose.
