Relay team uses banana as baton, gets disqualified

This happened over a week ago, but I just found it today. From The Grand Rapids Press:

Heading into the second-to-last event of the meet, the 400-meter relay, the Rams had the lead and looked good to get a much-needed win.

But the Rockford 400 relay team of Kyle Cushman, Zach Breen, Jeremy Jones and Frank Heeringa saw a joke go too far when they used a banana instead of their baton in the race, and were disqualified for using an illegal baton.

That opened the door for Hudsonville, which won the 400 relay and the last event of the day, the 1,600 relay, to win the upper division with a score of 65 points, two points ahead of the runner-up Rams.

The Rockford 400 relay team took second, but saw all of its points erased for the disqualification.
