Birds: What's all their incessant chirping about?
Edited on Sun May-06-07 08:53 AM by brentspeak
Have scientists figured it out, yet? Don't they (birds) ever shut up?

1. They are angry at my cat. They sit on a wire really close to him and scold him all day long.

3. Some of it is simply about sex
We have a manic chirper in our yard. He's a House Wren, and he is building up his little love nest in a house we have in our garden. When he isn't working on his digs, he's perched on top of the roof manically calling the girls to come in and take a look at the house.

It's really just a ploy to jump their bones.

14. Some others things birds run their beaks about other making more birds.
Fight club - telling other males or flock to back off

DefCom Four - warning the rest of the gang there's a bad 'un entering the zone

We need the extra room - encouraging the brats to fly and go the hell away

All right ladies Sound Off - doing roll call, crows are especially noted for this

Hey the diner's open - letting the gang know there's a new food source or sarge43 just put out more seed

A few off the top of my head

6. Just like human males...
they wear their flashiest get-ups and sing to get chicks.

Just be glad birds don't have PAs, mailing lists, and drum solos.

19. "Drum solos"?
We have a woodpecker in residence that does an excellent imitation of Buddy Rich -- right at sunrise -- every day.

11. some people enjoy the 'music'
I say they are singing out of their butts. I noticed with a grackle. Every time he chirped, his tail moved.

I have said before that anybody who talks about 'the music of the birds has either never heard music, or never heard a bird.' Their typical 'music' consists of about 3 notes, sung at a volume of FFFFFFF! and repeated 15 billion times. Then again, Beethoven's fifth is only 4 notes repeated with variations.

8. We have about 10 feeding stations around our yard
We just watched a pair of Mourning Doves. The male was strutting his stuff, puffing his chest out, and moving into the desired position. She was playing the "No Harold, I told you -- NO morning sex! I just want to eat my breakfast in peace." It was quite entertaining.

10. I think the hawks around our place watch for these strutting male doves.
Our bird feeders are like a fast food place for hawks and falcons.

The male doves who don't strut so much are probably having more babies.

Flashy Harold becomes food while the quiet ones are doing their wild thing under the bushes.

12. Your probably right
My cat had Harold in his mouth last weekend. The cat dropped Harold after seeing me come tearing after her. Harold flew off to procreate another day.

The birds of prey in our area lunch at our feeders in the winter months. Right now I think that the rodents are the main source of their diets, as we haven't seen them stalking the feeders lately.
