The stupid ass reported me the FBI as "hate crime".

Oh my god! We just got home from seeing "Wicked". What a fantastic show. I loved it.

The only thing that sucked was this stupid shit sitting in the row in front of me. She was fucking around with her phone sending text messages during the second act. Finally when it was a bit quiet, I said "That is SO rude!". She snapped her phone shut and slumped down in her seat.

At the end of the show after the standing ovation the cast got, the lights came up and my friends were talking about how great the show was. REAL LOUD I said "Oh my god, it makes me want to send a TEXT MESSAGE!" Needless to say I didn't let the asshole walk out of her row when the show ended. I threw my head back and like the royal bitch that I am (and now on the FBI's Most Wanted List) walked in front of her.

I sooo want to do this in one of my classes. I think it'd end the cell phone problem I have EVERY DAY in my classes. My syllabus says, "Turn off cell phones BEFORE entering the classroom." Do you think they listen? Hell no. I hate cell phone rudeness more than any other kind of rudeness (except for elevator rudeness, but that's another post). :grr:

13. When I went back to college

we had all these teenyboppers right out of high school using their phones in a lit course. I was the only parent in the class and I kept my phone on vibrate (in my pocket so I could feel it but it wouldn't distract). I explained to my prof that, because of MO laws on daycare, I needed to keep it on but would only use it if it was daycare (and I would dismiss myself from the room as quietly as possible). Supposedly the law in MO is that a parent has exactly one hour from time of initial to pick up their child or the provider may choose to turn you in to Family Services for neglect. (Sucky law, I know, but...)

Well, one day my child's daycare did call me because she had hit her head and was acting a bit "off". I left the room and stepped into the hall, ready to call them back. The prof followed behind me,grabbed my phone out of my hand and dropped it out of a second story window.

(Just for the record-I'd never had a call before and I informed all of my profs about this. All of them understood except for one-the lit prof.)

I picked up my daughter, drove home and called my advisor. He helped me drop the class asap.

(I once had am older colleague tell me that "Single mothers are the cause of the decline of Western civilization." He was well aware that I am a single parent. He said it on the elevator, when no one else was around to hear him say such an offensive thing. I turned to him and I said, "Oh really, well I think that old curmudgeons who can't keep their hands off of pretty young students are to be blamed for the decline of Western civilization." His jaw dropped, that a younger instructor would say something like this to a tenured, long-time prof, or maybe also because rumors had gotten around about his touchy-feeliness with students. The elevator opened right after I said what I did, and then I stepped off...I never had any trouble with him after that. Thank god he's since retired. He was constantly at the center of departmental bullshit.)

I couldn't stand him. Didn't help that a member of the local Dem party had approached me at the grocery store at while he was asking me a question about produce. (Something about cantaloupes or another. He's not the brightest). He wasn't exactly a fan before but I think the whole Dem member really took him over the edge. He's one of those "Compassionate Conservatives" that we've heard of but have rarely met in person. And, from a few things he said in class, he had a major complex concerning his mother.

I am sorry that that happened to you. I do allow parents to leave phones on, as long as they don't talk on the phone in class. I also allow students who have sick family members or who are expecting a substantial call to leave phones on (on vibrate, as you said). Sometimes there's a necessity for the phone to be on, and I always accomodate those situations, as long as the students tell me what's going on.

That prof sounds like a goofball with a chip on his shoulder. He followed you out of class? Good god, some people let a little bit of authority go to their heads. :(

Last year, the boyfriend and I went to see "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" here. We were so eager to see it. We get in our seats and...in the 4 seats next to me, these 4 dimwitted high school girls plop down and the one next to me...gets out her cell phone, her Palm Pilot, what fucking ever...and TURNS THEM ON. She was doing the same thing...text messaging her friends or whatever during the show.
