I'm depressed tonight...Advice?
Edited on Sat May-05-07 08:53 PM by Bicoastal
Usually, I'm a pretty upbeat guy, but various setbacks during the week have gotten me down.

It's 9:50 here in New York City. I'm 25, single, and fairly destitute. What should I do?

2. I am a people watcher!
If I were you, I would go to a local coffee shop, buy a cup and do some people watching.

3. It gets better
I was there four months ago big-time. Take your angst and make it work for you, like I did. I was so upset/depressed I couldn't eat. I went from 225 lbs. to 205 lbs. Now I look better and feel better than ever before. Think of depression as a tunnel. You might not see the light right now, but it's there.

4. It's 61 degrees. Go on over to Washington Square and hang out.
Better yet, Tompkins Square.

13. Hmm...
If it were me, I'd probably wander over to the film forum and see what was playing there. It's always nice to disappear into a good movie.

Sorry to hear about your situation...hope it improves.

8. Sigh, I feel like I've talked about it so much on here.
It's summer, in between semesters at NYU (I'm a Grad) and before last Wednesday, I knew I had a job, housing and vacation time all lined for the next 4 months. I was hired by Carnival Cruise as a musician over my spring break, and for the last 7 weeks, I waited and waited and waited and waited for them to process my medical papers, which was the second and last step of the hiring process.

Well, that fell through, due to Carnival's habit of screwing their employees. They just couldn't get my medical stuff finished in time, and I was told Wednesday that all slots for the summer were now filled.

And in one full swoop:

No job
No place to live
No musical experience
No vacation time in the Carribean.

It's not a great feeling, made even worse by the fact that I have to vacate my apartment in two days. I do have a place to stay temporarily, but not for long--and no idea what to about employment before September. I'm worried and disappointed and angry all at the same time--and my best friend isn't returning my voice mail.

12. ...
 I'm sorry to hear that - sounds like you're going through a rough time (she says, showing off her talent for stating the obvious at inopportune moments). I don't know if there's anything I can do to help, but I will send good vibes your way...hey, you never know, right? Peace.

14. Well shit
it's not bad to talk about it again. you have a short term plan, and i suspect you will develop a longer term plan quickly as well.

It sucks that so many things have done the domino effect on you, but that seems to be what happens sometimes.

sorry man, all that sucks, but other opportunities will present themselves.

9. Move to St Paul, MN.
:D

We're more fun over here and it's cheaper to live here as well.

I'll throw TV and movie parties; I'll even supply popcorn, carbonated beverages, liquor if you're over 21, and some specially shaped balloons! :D

11. Chocolate usually works for me...
...but I've been told by several of my guy friends that that's just a "girl thing," so maybe not. Listening to upbeat music can help me sometimes, or just chatting with friends is nice too. I've also found that YouTube is a great resource for fighting depression - whenever I'm feeling down, I go to some of the silly videos I have bookmarked (mostly "mix tape" video clips from The Office, with Dwight featured prominently - he always makes me laugh!) and just sit back, watch, and enjoy. Hope that helps! :hi:

16. Dark chocolate rules.
Antioxidants, serotonin...I think the good stuff cancels out the fat, sugar, & calories. At least, that's what I keep telling myself. :silly: ;)

Think of something good that happened to you.

Edit: Doing this while listening to music you like works even better.
