1. I moved to be close to my new job last year
It is less than 2 miles away.
Between getting the new job and moving, I had to drive over 50 miles, which seemed way to far to me.

2. I live about 18 miles from my summer job.
It's not bad - not too much of a commute, but gives me enough time to listen to a few songs on the radio and get in the right mindset for the day. :)

5. I could say 0 to7 or 8
Headquarters for the ranch is 0, furthest point away is maybe 7 by air, but about 15 by vehicle and another VERY rugged half mile "hike" (I have never actually been to that corner - it is a goal)

15. out here it can take 80 acres or more to feed one cow (and leave
plenty of feed and habitat for wildlife, not to mention ground cover to protect the soil from excessive erosion.)

80% of this place is leased from the state of Arizona.

6. I think that in the not so distant future, when gas is 5.00 a gallon,
those who are lucky enough to have jobs will live within a couple of miles from work.

I work in San Francisco. You think I can afford to live there? Public transit does me well enough.

32. I predict that people will make the necessary changed to adapt.
It won't be unheard of to change jobs based on your location, in order to live closer to work. I believe it will even become a trend.

30. Where I live it is more than $6 a gallon
Edited on Sun May-06-07 10:37 AM by billyskank
It won't be the end of the world, you're just used to paying very little for it. You'd have to drive a hideously inefficient vehicle ridiculous distances to get into trouble, I think.

Edit: I drive 38 miles a day in a car that gets 28mpg average.

41. But if I remember correctly, Great Britain had a great
transportation system. The Tube would take you anywhere. And then there are the trains. It has been many years since I have been there, but I was impressed with the transporation systems.

10. Mine's a little complicated
I do freelance CAD work and roughly it's:

(#) = miles one way

(0) 20% - work at home.

(1) 50% - onsite work for regular client.

(23) 30% = onsite work for regular client.

13. I was commuting 21 miles each way, 5 days a week until recently.
I found a new job 4 miles from home which pays more, but does not offer health insurance.
I had to go get my own HB, but with factoring in the gas savings, I am making $300 a month more.

I feel for those who have long commutes.

Edited on Sat May-05-07 11:18 PM by mycritters2
The furthest I've ever been was 15 miles, but in an area with very little traffic. Now, it takes me 30 seconds to get to work when the traffic is bad. Another area where I know I'm lucky. I wish we'd design more communities so people could live near their work. We're going to have to, istm.

33. Well, let's see
My HQ is in North America, and I work out of Germany, but have to
be in France and Belgium once a week, Holland and Switzerland once
a month, and England, Spain, Italy and occasionally Eastern Europe,
East Asia and Latin America.

I guess that counts as over 20 miles, no matter where you start from!

36. Less than 5. I like to live close to work...
Maybe that's the idea of sacrifice; people shouldn't want/have to live 50 miles away from work. It's a stupid mindset, really. Well, maybe not stupid... a curious one, I should say...

38. It's 16 miles each way, and the commute bites the big one.
:yoiks: It takes a minimum of 30 minutes to get to work, and often it takes 45-50. On the weekends, the same drive is 20 minutes. It's in-town one-freakin'-lane-in-each-direction driving for 10 of the 16 miles, and it's frustrating beyond belief. I used to drive 20 miles one way to work when I worked at another school, and I got to take a seldom-used four-lane US highway most of the way, and I always made it there in 25-30 minutes. Those were the days....

For me, on some days, that would involve a 600 mile walk in
