Seattle DUers-Have you ever used a food bank?
Would appreciate info as I am unemployed and my wife is being laid off at the end of the month. How do you find these places and how do you qualify?

Information greatly appreciated.

2. Will live on the East Coast
but usually you are allowed one trip a month. Call your local Social Agency, mmm United Way or other like places and they can give you the lowdown.

Good Luck

5. Also
through Social Serices, apply for food stamps, or heat assistance. Gotta make the call. They should be in the Blue Pages

10. Also,
if you need medical care. 90% of hospitals have programs for to help low income folks get care. I have a client that saves a lot of money due to being on a program. You have to call and ask though.

Sorry I do this for a living in Virginia

Fortunately I've always managed to find luxuries or things to cut out so I can buy the staples.

>Fortunately I've always managed to find luxuries or things to cut out so I can buy the staples.<

Wow. I'll bet the author of this thread has never, ever thought of that.

I don't like what you've posted. Was it meant to hurt?

...or supportive here.

Why ARE you here anyway? Apparently just to annoy people.

Great work.

6. do you qualify for food stamps?
You might want to check into that, as it takes several weeks. Also check with your local Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul about food boxes.

12. Northwest Harvest on Cherry Street
Edited on Thu Jan-15-04 04:24 PM by geniph
will give anyone a bag of food, no questions asked. (They will ask for last name and zip code and number in family, but they'll take Smith, 98101, and 4 if that's what you say. The reason they ask for zip code is to figure out where people in need live.)

http://www.northwestharvest.org/cherryst.htm

Northwest Harvest rocks.

I haven't (yet) had to use them myself, but I have donated food and supplies to them quite frequently. There used to be government food surplus you could get when I was a kid, but the retail stores hated that, so the government switched to food stamps, which is nowhere near as efficient. But gotta make sure the corporate masters get their cut.

13. Not used one, but I've done some volunteer work for one.

There's a foodbank in just about every neighbourhood. Most are open only on specific days. You do not need to qualify, it's first come, first served. You tell them a little about the number of folks and whether there are children to consider and they'll put together an assortment of whatever's on hand. Most folks drive by to learn the hours, then station someone outside the doors to wait for opening time.

There's one in Ballard on 25th and I think 75th 70th, and one in the U-District that works from the Congregational Church.

You can also call the local cathedrals, or any church with whom your family may be affiliated. There's an interfaith project to feed the homeless and hungry that I know the Catholic and Episcopalian cathedral staff personally participate in. They can put you in touch with quite a few resources.

Good luck to you and best wishes for better times. :pals:

15. I'm not familiar with Seattle but most cities have a Community...
...Development Department. Counties too. Call them and just ask for info. Usually there's a person there who deals with HUD programs and such and would know who you could contact.

Same with counties. Better yet many counties have an Elder/Senior Services department that knows ALL of the organisations in the area. Don't worry about the "Senior" label, they have the info for all citizens.

OK, while typing out the post I decided to just look it up an voila, here: http://www.cityofseattle.net/humanservices/food&nutrition.htm

"Emergency Food Programs - 206-684-0281
The Human Services Department funds 16 of 29 area food banks and other emergency feeding programs for people who are homeless or low-income."

Perseverance my friend, perseverance.

19. Not in Seattle, but in Olympia, I did
Used it on a few occasions during the first year Otter and I lived in Oly. Excellent, excellent program, and I have made it a point to donate back to it and other food banks when times are good.
