2. My sister just had one removed.
It's orthoscopic surgery - relatively simple, from what I understand.

No big deal - get it checked out!

4. My mother eventually had a complete hystorectomy for hers.
My best friend has polycystic ovaries, which can be treated somewhat with medication but not terribly effectively in most cases. She's being treated and her hormone levels are much closer to normal which is helping with her other symptoms and may eventually correct her infertility, we hope.

You really need to see a doctor and get a second opinion if they don't sound like they're making a real concerted effort to find out what the problem is. For some reason a lot of gynos aren't very proactive in stopping stuff like this and it can be work to find one who takes your problems seriously.

11. The only GYN I ever had
that wasn't proactive on issues I was having was a man. He was my first GYN and the last time I had a male GYN. I've never had a problem with any of the female GYN's I've had since.

14. I've had somewhat of an opposite experience
I have polycysitic ovaries as an above poster mentioned and saw female gyns who did nothing but throw BCPs at me and when I would bleed heavily for months non stop they didn't seem to care. One BCP made me bleed so badly I was given methergine but she told me to keep taking it anyway. You'd think they'd be more likely to understand how annoying that is. A male gyn was recommended by another doctor and he was much more useful. I always thought that was strange and if he wasn't on my insurance anymore I'd probably automatically find a female gyn.

5. In sympathy (NOT medical advice)
I hope the mods don't lock this thread. It's about support, not medical advice.

Ovarian cysts come is many varieties, so treatment also varies. Some women need surgery. Others don't. Advice about them is beyond me.

All I can say is that I've had this problem. It hurts. A lot.

6. Yes.
For years, I had pain, which the doctors assured me were "just cysts."

One day, I doubled over in pain. I had a ruptured ovary, which required emergency surgery. Dr. finds out I have endometriosis. They tried to do it w/a laproscope, but the fibroids were way too big, so they had to open me up. It was so bad, they had to remove the ovary, and I lost a great deal of blood during the surgery.

For years, I had pain, which the doctors assured me were "just cysts."

I'm glad you're getting checked out right away. I just thought that periods were supposed to hurt. Apparently, I have a very high threshhold of pain. x(

Good luck to you.

7. I had surgery for one at age 12
They thought it was my appendix.

Then my daughter had the same thing at age 14. After a couple more that didn't need surgery she was put on the pill. Apparently its very effective in stopping them. It has been working well and hopefully she can avoid any future attacks. Each large cyst can damage your chances on having children. My daughter lost one fallopian tube, but thankfully not the ovary itself as I did.

Mine was the size of a large grapefruit. Hers were 10,8 and 7 centimeters

Talk to your doctor about it.

8. A friend of mine just had one taken out laproscopically
I had that done when they took out my gall bladder. In and out in half a day (barring any unforseen complications), and probably a 1 week rest/restriction time.

Of course, it all depends on the size of the cyst.

Hope they are able to help you out! :hi:

10. I had them on
my left ovary and my uterus. Since my mom had cancer and I was not too close to menopause yet, my GYN decided on a hysterectomy and I agreed. My right ovary was fine so I asked that it be left there so I didn't have to go on HRT.

13. I had a corpus luteum cyst on my right ovary in 1987.
It was extremely painful, and I sought medical attention. Under the doctor's supervision, I managed the pain and the cyst eventually shrunk. I have not had a problem with cysts since then.

15. Just went through this with my daughter. She was hospitalized for them.
She was put on Loestrin. It's not working so they kicked up the hormone therapy. You want to be careful because they can cut off the blood supply (torsion).

18. I have functional luteal cysts.
The choice I've been given is either to have menopause chemically induced, or to go on birth control pills which stop ovulation and therefore eliminate the possibility of these cysts for most (but not all) cycles. Once I get a cyst it lasts for three cycles so I really try to avoid them! I've been told that my ovaries "are like swiss cheese". Eww.

With my new high blood pressure my gyn told me that I'd have to go off the pills and I responded that I'd rather die of a stroke than have the pain, bloating, bleeding and other miserable symptoms of ovarian cysts every month for three weeks.

Of course there are different types of cysts so there are different approaches to control them. I hope you find something that works, because I know it SUCKS. -Lisa
