It's time.......Farewell to all of you!

But only for three weeks!

Some of you already know.....my husbnd and I are leaving tomorrow for our vacation!

The core of the trip will be about 10 days in the Czech Republic and Germany...

The rest of the trip will be in New York and London!

On the way over, we will visit MAHNY in New York, along with whoever else can make it!

And in London, we will see billyskank and maybe one or two others!

We will visit Prague for several days, and then we'll sail up the Elbe River to Berlin!

I will have some internet access along the way, and so whenever I can, I will get online and share some of my pics and thoughts with all of you!

I know already how much I will miss you......

But...it's only three weeks...

Remember...I love you all........

It's not really goodbye...

But rather...until we meet again!

And Germany- ah- one of my all time favorites. I did the youth hostel/Eurail thing when I was younger, traveling solo and spending a couple of months each trip.

with getting dinner ready, etc. and I totally missed that you were going to Berlin. I will be very curious as to your report there.

On my youthful travels, I had been traveling around Italy and then I spent about a month in Greece, while I had to get back to Deutschland to meet my parents for a short trip.

The best fare that I could find was from Crete- to Athens- change of planes in Sofia, Bulgaria and then into what was still EAST Berlin. I did not care for it. I did not feel safe, nor comfortable- the entry guards checked through everything of mine- 'course I was a youthful traveler with a backpack, but I was a good girl. I never felt so happy to get back on the Western side of Germany in my life.

But if you have it in you, you can do two simple things to alleviate this jealousy:

1. Go to the Tower of London -- a place I've always wanted to go.
2. Take lots of pictures.
3. Take lots of pictures in Germany and the Czech Republic, too.
4. I've always wanted to see the Danube and the Elbe. Take pictures of them, too.
5. Post the pictures on DU.
6. I've never even been to New York (ain't that sad?). While you're there, take in a Broadway play. Something else I've always wanted to do. If Mr. Peggy doesn't want to, tell him you HAVE to avoid the DU curse. And don't tell him I just made up that part about a DU curse.
7. When you finally get back, tell us all about it.

Green with envy here. My Mom went to Prague about 10 years ago and totally loved it. She and I went to Germany, Austria and Switzerland (hit Liechtenstein too) in the summer of 1980--beautiful memories. Hopefully I'll go back someday.

I know you will enjoy that. I haven't been to Germany and my experience of the Czech Republic was limited to an airport stopover when I was eight years old (incidentally the same year that communism collapsed in the Czech Republic -if only I'd been interested in politics then!) but I've been to the UK twice and loved it. Same for New York And I know you and your husband will too!

May you both have a safe, blessed, enjoyable and fun-filled holiday with lots of happy memories. And I look forward to your pictures!

And incidentally you are not the only one going overseas. I'm also going to SE Asia this weekend and will be there for two weeks.

167. You will LOVE Prague

I am in Düsseldorf, and all this time, my wife (who is German) and
I never found the time to run down there (just a 70 minute flight)
until last year. It is one absolutely GORGEOUS city, and do NOT miss
the grungy little Afghan restaurant just off one of the main streets.
It's in many of the insiders' guides, but not in the big tourist
literature.

It has great food for a song. Also, don't miss the Italian ice cream
place (cream dream or something like that) just over the Karl's Bridge.
The language is difficult, but if you know some Russian or Polish, you
can get the basics. Otherwise, lots of people know German and English.
The architecture in that city will shock and awe you--in the best way.

Too bad you won't be in the western part of Germany. We have a thousand-year
old castle in the back with a moat, peacocks in the courtyard and a
wonderful restaurant in one of the towers.

168. One other thing about Prague

Stay away from the fancy-looking restaurants on the main drags,
especially Parizka (Paris street, near the old Jewish quarter).
They're way overpriced, and the food sucks.

Try high tea at the Hotel Pariz (not near the street of the same name).

Do go see some of the great mime shows near those same restaurants.

And if you like jewelry, near the Karl's Bridge, there are a hundred
shops with beautifully crafted red garnet jewelry (price shop!! and
pay cash--they'll bargain if you do). These stones are apparently found
in quantity near Prague. My wife doesn't much care for jewelry, but even
she went for a necklace or two. Most of the sales staff is Russian. If
you speak any Russian and smile, you'll get an even better deal!
