Could you allow yourself to have a serious relationship with a republican?

I couldn't have had one. Thankfully, my wife is a staunch democrat.

9. He'll forgive me.
As long as I don't mention his stint as a Katie Harris for Senate volunteer.

Oh shit.

22. We sometimes discuss politics, and (like other issues) sometimes we agree and sometimes we don't.
Bottom line - she's a great wife, a wonderful mother, and my best friend.

7. I will be marrying a Republican...
we have just chosen to not talk politics. He does infuriate me from time to time though...He can't help that he was brain-washed by very Conservative parents.

8. It's been a family tradition....
That us liberal women marry republican/conservative men...makes for interesting holidays. But at least my little sister broke the mold with her husband...his favorite saying is that a "ham sandwich is better than Bush..":)

14. Not only could I NOT have had a relationship with a republican, I

have broken off relationships with women, prior to my being married, who were apolitical and not the least bit interested in politics.

I am open minded about a lot, but not only would I likely have little in common with them, I doubt there'd be any respect either way. And I would hate to have to explain every joke to them over and over.

16. it depends on the republican
An Eisenhower republican or a staunch conservative, * loving republican.

I know plenty of republicans that can't stand the man in charge and didn't vote for him. The older version of republican is not as hateful and as damaging as this new breed.

So if it's the older version republican my answer would be, yes.

17. Ditto.
My husband considers himself Republican, but frequently votes third party. He didn't even consider voting for Bush.

That said, he's not highly political, and I think some aspects of his "conservatism" seem rather malleable.

If he were a raging right-wing Bush-supporter, I couldn't handle it, but being with someone whose opinions differ from mine doesn't undermine my own convictions.

I think to have a firm grasp of issues that one considers important, and to form a solid base of logical, thorough understanding from which personal convictions stem, it's critical to comprehend the opposing school of thought.

We have our sticking points, to be sure, but I simply don't need my spouse to mirror my every political sentiment, in order to sustain my own system of beliefs and values. That "system" is my own and too developed to be threatened by mere disagreement.

21. I agree. It would not be my preference, but I could deal with an
Eisenhower or Goldwater republican. But a Bush-lover? No way!

18. No. I could NEVER have a serious relationship with someone I don't respect.
I don't respect Republicans. They are either stupid and deluded or greedy and out for themselves and to hell with everybody else. They enable evil.

Never, never, never.

*shudder*

My husband is even farther to the left than I am, thankfully.

23. Hear Hear!
I no longer have any time for any of them. My kid played with a kid who's parents I found out are Bill idiot on faux watchers. The thing is they view it with the 6 and 4 year old! "We don't shelter our children" The last conversation I had with them was about gay marriage and all they could say was don't you have any morals? I said no I don't. Gay marriage doesn't have any impact on my life our yours end of story. End of interactions with them as well.
They have been threatening to move back to Texas for 3 years and all I can say is go now! They act like we should talk them into staying but nobody wants them to. It is really awkward when they say it because there is silence. We will help them pack!

19. Most people don't have strong political opinions
When I met my SO, he'd never voted in his life. He had a lot of views that could have been considered more right-leaning but not because of any ideology really, more because he didn't think about political repercussions too much.

Most people are like that - not really political, I mean.

However, in dating him, I found him to have many, many qualities of a true liberal. And since I do talk a lot about issues and politics, he gradually got more interested and understood what I was saying and feeling.

We still disagree on some issues but he's a registered Dem, watched all the debates and the Dem convention in '04, and has voted every year for the last three.

However, I don't think I could form a relationship with someone who was as strong in their opposite opinion as I am in mine - not if they were as interested in it on a day to day basis as I am.

24. No
My SO has no interest whatsoever in politics, which has at times caused some contention with us because she is so uninformed and easily susceptible to bullshit talking points. She's essentially a Democrat in her beliefs, and did register to vote for the first time after we met.
