ugh - up all night at the emergency room.
Baby had a 103-point-something fever. Much poking and prodding and howling with the insult of it all. Now he's fine and at home in bed, and I'm walking into walls at work. Send coffee.

4. it is a relief.
The legendary resilience of babies is a wonderful thing. I've found that it fades somewhat by 38, however. x(

8. I'm hanging.
I did better than Ms Uly, who needed to take a break when they brought in needles for the bloodwork and a mother-scratching catheter for a urine sample.

Now *there's* an experience - holding down your 19-month-old son while he gets a catheter at 3 am. :scared:

12. My son fell and cut his forehead very deeply when he was two or so
My wife couldn't stay in the room with him as the plastic surgeon stitched the cut, so I was in there with him trying to comfort him as he screamed.

That was the worst day of our lives. Fortunately, he's doing great now (7 years later) and even is proud of his scar (which didn't turn out to be bad because of the plastic surgeon's handiwork). He likes to say he has a scar like Harry Potter, which makes him very special.

:hi:

6. I remember those days
My daughters are 17 months apart - I think I was exhausted for about 5 years straight. Then I got pregnant with my son. :eyes:

Another 3 years of exhaustion.

Don't drink too much coffee - you'll just be walking into walls really fast.

my wife was ready to start working on adoption #2 immediately. I think she's glad now that I talked her into waiting for a while. :D I can't imagine having a two-month-old in addition to Chris right now...

7. gosh I remember when the baby b's used to have ER visits like that
high on albuterol...we would bring them home and they would bounce around like ping pong balls after Mr. Moose dropped 'em...

and Mr. B and I would take shifts sleeping...I also remember The Spirit of St. Louis movie would be on each time we had an experience like that...and we started to feel like we were in the movie Groundhog Day...

Gosh...the memories...

10. I remember doing shifts.
Didn't seem to last too long before I just got used to the sleep deprivation and became the chosen one at night. I knew I was doomed the morning he stood up in his crib, looked through the complete darkness at our bed and said "Da!"

16. Nothing like taking the asthmatic kid to the ERr at midnight,
sitting up all night waiting for the respiratory therapist to show, only to go home at 6 AM (with no therapy!!!!) because his symptoms clear up with the dawn!!! Did I mention I was 7 months pregnant at the time? Thank God our family doctor prescribed a home nebulizer after that!

18. I think I would have killed someone if that happened to me..
my daughter almost died waiting in a local ER for them to see her...by the time they took her back to be evaluated (meanwhile I kept insisting that her asthmatic condition was more important than the hysteric woman with a slight rash)...the doctors were ready to call a helicopter for her to be transported to the Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh...

After that...we drove directly to Children's and got far better treatment...

I learned to use a stethoscope as well...

Meanwhile we had a home nebulizer at home and our ER trips were typically because the home machine wasn't enough...

I remember being pregnant in the ER with a toddler...gosh...that was horrid...so I can empathize..

11. poor Christopher
and Daddy! it is awful when our kids don't feel well and there is very little we can do for them. i remember when Dylan was about a year and half old, he contracted a stomach virus. it nearly broke my heart. :(

Sending good thoughts for Chris' speedy recovery, and sleep for Dad!

13. when my son was 18 months he had a spinal tap
His fever spiked to 105 and I guess they wanted to rule out meneningitis. The fever caused him to have a fibral seizure - we were on a packed train when it happened. Train pulled into next station and an ambulance met us at the station and took us to the hospital.

They never did determine the cause, apparently just a virus, but it sure was scary.

Glad he's home, and I hopefully office cubes are padded?

14. Awww. I hope he is on the mend
Sounds like he is, thank goodness.

When my oldest was a baby we were traveling back to North Carolina (hubby was in the Marines) and my son had an ear infection that caused his fever to spike high. To complicate it we were stuck on I-95 in a blizzard. We picked the right exit to get off and got to a hospital where they fixed him up with antibiotics.

Try to get some rest when you get home.

How is Chris now? Doing better? I can totally relate to Mrs. Uly. When Carter gets his regular shots, Daddy has to hold him because mommy cries too hard! :)

I hope the little one is doing much better now

31. LOL!
I think the toys fool around at night and multiply. I'm thinking of putting a moratorium on new ones for a while - books only, even though those are starting to take over the shelves. He does have a new set of alphabet/number blocks, which is good. He says "two" now, although it's the only number he knows how to say (occasionally "tree!" for three), so everything is "two" when he counts. :D

Wonder if we could set up a picnic for early June. I'm thinking restaurants might not be a good idea, lest we attract the lounge child police with the toddler...

32. A picnic would be fantastic!
How about a Sunday afternoon? Just tell us when and where and we'll show up with lots of food.

On a side note, does the county you live in have the Book a Month until they're 5 program? Dolly Parton's Imagination Library? Not many in the state do, but ours does and we've signed up Carter. He should be getting his first book soon!

I love that Chris says 'tree' for three. My nephew was convinced that the word yellow was pronounced laowlow. The learning process is amazing! We can actually see the look on his face when Carter realizes something new.

33. I'll drop a post in the GA forum,
although I guess Cotton Bear was talking about doing something in Athens. I'll float it.

I'm not sure if Paulding has a Book a Month program or not - thanks for the tip, I'll check it out. The learning process with kids is a trip. Chris watched his mom blow on a piece of chicken to cool it down a couple of weeks ago, so now he has to blow on *all* food, warm or not, and show it to one of us before eating it. Ritual. :D

20. Twice this week my son's temperature went over 104.
We took him to the doctor last Sunday, and they said it was strep throat, but the anti-biotics didn't seem to be working. One night (around 3:30 am) he was so hot that we had to give him a cool bath to try and bring his temperature down. On Thursday, the doctor said he wanted to run some tests to see if he might have mono. Luckily the tests came back negative, and it looks like it was just the strep.

By the weekend his temperature was back to normal, but we spent a few sleepless nights last week.

He's a great kid, and you hate so much to see them feel bad.

Glad to hear your boy is doing better.

26. it especially tears his mother up.
I worry about him when he's sick, but my wife has a tendency to expect the worst. She was feeling bad when we got home this morning because he ended up having blood drawn, a chest xray and a catheter, all for a virus. Better safe, I guess.

Glad your boy is better as well, and thanks.

29. Thank you - we've been through this before with the strep throat, but the high temperature was a bit
scary this time around (since he usually responds to the antibiotics pretty quick).

My son is 10, and now that he's feeling better, he's bummed that he ruined his perfect attendance at school for the year (that and the fact that he had to miss a friend's birthday party on Friday).

Best to you and your family,

Tim
