75. OMG!!! You lived in Alvadore??? When?
I lived there for awhile in 1979-1980. My BIL was a volunteer firefighter there. He and my sister ran the little store/gas station, and lived behind at the store (living quarters upstairs and behind the store). Wow!!! :wow:

77. Hey

Small world...been in that little store many times...we moved there in 85...left in 95. Moved to Eugene in 69.
We lived down on the corner of Spires Lane and the road that cuts off of Clear Lake and goes to Shore Lane (forgot
the name)...loved the area, except for the weather. Pacific Northwest is hard to beat. Assume from your handle that
you are in Seattle...another of our favourite cities. PS Did you know Steve and Betty Avery? (Friends)
Thanks for the note....pat

78. I think I did know the Avery's.
My sis and BIL got married in the little church out there in Alvadore. They got married during the winter, and it poured down rain that whole day. Nice wedding, anyway.

The first house I lived in in Alvadore was down the street from the church; the second one was directly behind the store. Had no sink in the bathroom, and the only source of heat was a wood burning stove. We bought a space heater after my daughter was born. Kind of "rustic" living in a way, but I loved it anyway.

12. Some little town between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming
Edited on Sun Apr-29-07 02:34 AM by Breeze54
I don't remember the name of it but it had a tavern and a horse tied up outside! That was
the first time I ate pepper rings as opposed to onion rings. They were good! My traveling
companion and I got in an argument there and then decided to stop and eat and have a
cold beer. Cool off. I remember there was a lot of info/signs about The Pony Express too.
I also remember that the main road (the only road) was not paved. It was off I-80.

13. Cuba, Missouri
My dad's car broke down there when we were traveling cross-country in 1971. The town was like something out of the 1940s. Even the prices in the restaurant and store were absurdly low, and the cost of replacing our car's engine was less than it would have cost for a tune-up in L. A. The people were frighteningly friendly and dressed about 20 years out of date too. It was like we'd broken down in Mayberry.

My nine-year-old brain kept playing the Twilight Zone theme the whole time I was there.

The place only has one stoplight, but I was looking for the nursery to buy some plants. I ended up lost on some dirt road that went on for miles and miles and miles. I went in on a paved road, left on the dirt road and ended up in the same place. That was one odd all day trip from the twilight zone. I saw 2 deer, 3 rabbits, several snakes, and I don't know what else in the woods as I drove and drove, just praying for something close to civilization to come back to my life. I'll never go to that town alone again. Whew!

When we first moved to Maine 2 1/2 yrs ago my husband made me drive all the way up there from Wiscasset because someone told him that we were guaranteed to see a moose. Well, we didn't see a moose and the whole way home we had 9 month old twins screaming in the back of the car. We stopped at that little store/gas station in Jackman to fuel up and get some snacks before driving back home.

see the Spook Light. Was the "museum" still there when you went? There used to be an old who wrote poems about the Spook Light and had a little shack there with infomation, snacks, etc. Sometimes he'd sing a song or two that he had written. The last time I was there was back in the 60's.

94. Small correction: South Park is not a town.
It is a geographical region. The main town in SP is Fairplay, but you can also visit the towns of Hartsel and Alma, which each have fewer than 200 residents. I've been to all three, but never all three on the same trip out there. SP is a very interesting place to explore, that's for sure. Coming over Independence Pass is quite a view, and the ride down to Colorado Springs has some very cool topography and geological formations. I ought to camp out there sometime, but this whole college thing keeps interfering :)

48. Grape Creek (Pronounced as Crick) Illinois.
I swear I have NEVER seen anything like it in my life. Even the area locals get freaked out about going there.

We went to a bar there called Rosie's that has been standing since prohibition when it was a Blind Pig. As we walked in they introduced me to the bartender called (an I am NOT making this up!) Raymond the Pollack. I said "Nice to meet you Raymond" and he responded with "NO, it is Raymond the POLLACK" like it was his last name or something.

When they talked to me, the first question every one of them asked me was "What ARE you" meaning what country did my forefathers come from. Finally, after about the third of fourth time I got asked that I responded by asking "WHY has everyone in here asked me that?"

The response:

"It helps us decide how to feel abut you."

Yep. I was there and I walked out alive.

56. Marianna Lakes
In northern Alberta. At the time it consisted of one gas station/restaurant, one house and one trailer. It was about 100 km from any other town, north or south - east or west was only boreal forest.

Now it's probably larger (more trailers), due to its proximity to Fort McMurray, and the 0% vacancy rate there.

I've been to more one horse towns than I can remember - I've done a lot of travelling across much of Canada by car. Marianna Lakes is by far the smallest.

63. Not really a town, but the most desolate area I've ever been to:
Panamint Valley, CA in the Mojave desert - makes Death Valley look like a metropolis.

85. Well, no wonder...
It's one valley west of Death Valley.
Death Valley looks busier for two reasons...
1. Death Valley is a National Park.
2. Panamint Valley is a Naval Weapons Range.

Get lost in Death Valley, Park Rangers look for you.
Get lost in Panamint Valley, and Forward Air Controllers call airstrikes on you.

there is a bar, a church, a few houses, and a sometimes open restaurant. I grew up 1/2 mile from the town.

1400 kms west of Hawaii...a rock in the Pacific that's just slightly smaller than one square mile in area. They did have a bar and a landing strip.

I'd also include Thurso, Scotland....the Gateway to Orkney!
Not extremely small (pop. 7,000 and change when I was there), but certainly out of the way. It's the northernmost town on the British mainland.
Just take the A9 north until it runs out.

...and, of course, beautiful Panmunjeom, Korea.
Half of the locals there weren't very friendly.

87. Not counting ghost towns...Fields, OR
from the Harney County website:

"Fields is about as far as one can get from anywhere – 112 miles south of Burns, and a long, long way from anywhere else. The old stone roadhouse still stands, remodeled as a store and restaurant. The stone horse barn is still in use, although it has partly collapsed. The stationmaster’s tiny cabin with walls of sawed stone and a sod roof, long unused, reminds the passerby of pioneer times."
