I don't remember The Monkees making a psychadelic movie
Edited on Mon Apr-23-07 12:55 PM by catmandu57
But they did Head 1968 http:www.//imdb.com/title/0063049/ To be fair it was 1968 and there were more than a few things going on at the time. I just caught the end of it, the last half hour on tmcw, they're showing it again next month I'll have to mark it and watch it.
From what I seen it was a typical 60's psychadelic flic, no plot really just an excuse to drop the cube and enjoy.

edit: the link isn't working, I'll try to fix it.

1. I saw "Head" about ten years ago.
It was very strange.

3. It's unwatchable, with or without "dropping the cube" as you say.
Without, it makes no sense and you're just sitting there going, "Wow. This is really, really stupid."

With, and you watch about 15 minutes of it before going, "How long have we been sitting here? An hour? Two? Hey, you wanna go for a walk?"

4. Head was an interesting movie
Not the same slapstick as the TV show, nor the downright weirdness of the TV Special "33 1/3 Revolutions per Monkee" but a strange journey indeed. Jack Nicholson directed it, (a very young and VERY hot) Teri Garr makes an appearance, as well as Frank Zappa and a few others.

True story - they called it "Head" so that if it were a sucess (it wasn't) they could bill the directorial/production team aas "from the people who gave you HEAD"

Props should be given out for the "mobius strip timeline" style tho...

7. Imdb says
that nicholson co wrote it. I only remember the Monkees as being on the edge of bubblegum.

9. This was part of their break-from-bubblegum era
Around the end, they tried playing their own instruments (they sucked, well except Nesmith), and tried tackling issues beyond the usual BS. On their last episode they freed a magic pot monster (no shit!)

10. That would have got my interest
When i looked at the data base there were two movies with the title Head, one from 1968 and one from 2005, I didn't open the 2005, but I've got a pretty good guess as to the content.

11. Once you see it, you won't forget it
Love it or hate it, it makes an impression. One of the first joint efforts between Bob Rafelson, who was a writer, director and producer for The Monkees TV series and Jack Nicholson. Soon after they had a big success with Five Easy Pieces.

12. I love it. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.
I've seen it probably a half a dozen times, and I see more in it every time.

Things in it actually make sense, if you're familiar with the Monkees at all. For instance, the giant Victor Mature that follows them around tormenting them appears to be a reference to RCA Victor, the record label that gave them a lot of grief.

Any movie that begins with the Monkees committing suicide, features appearances by Carol Doda, Frank Zappa, Teri Garr AND Ray Nitschke can't be too bad.

"Let me tell you one thing, son. NOBODY ever lends money to a man with a sense of humor!"

13. I was wondering about Victor Mature
That makes perfect sense now. Like I said I only caught the end of it, the next showing is the fourth of next month. I'll set the dvr to record it so I can watch it at leisure.
