Trouble in Paradise
Winds wreak havoc on power, roads, schools

Winds gusting to 85 mph whipped O'ahu and Kaua'i today with a tree-toppling, roof-lifting vengeance.

The problems started shortly after midnight and were expected to last until this evening.

More than 16,000 O'ahu customers lost electrical power at various times all day, nine public schools were closed, as well as roads on the North Shore and in Kane'ohe, and police officers were told to stay on duty for an extra shift to direct traffic at intersections in Kane'ohe town. ]

"North Shore wave fits five You know the surf is big when five surfers can take off on the same wave and not get in each other's way. That's the way it was yesterday at Waimea Bay, where wave heights reached 20 feet."
