Poll question: If you were to listen to uncensored stand-up comedy on the radio . . .
Edited on Sat Apr-14-07 10:54 AM by bertha katzenengel
. . . would you listen to the really graphic sexual stuff? I am no prude, but I just find that stuff disgusting. It's the same way I think about porn: fine for others, doesn't interest me in the least.

Is it just me?

On XM Radio, I like Comedy 150 - the uncensored - and Laugh USA 151 - the "clean" channel*. There is no in-between.

I would like to listen to Lewis Black and Mitch Hedberg and Bill Hicks and Ellen DeGeneres and Craig Shoemaker and John Pinette and Frank Caliendo and the guy from Maine whose name escapes me -- all of whom cuss but do not have graphic descriptions of genitals and sexual acts --

without listening to Bobby Collins (or is it Bobby Slayton? or both?) and Mitch Fatel and John Valby and Robert Schimmell and Lisa Lampinelli and the guy with the one-liners whose name escapes me. When these comics come on, yes, AAMOF, I do switch the channel. But I'd like to listen without turning it off about, oh, 60-70% of the time. :eyes:

Most of those "gross" comics have good routines too without the gross sex shit.

Why can't XM create an in-between channel? One that plays the bits they can't play on 151, but without the sexual stuff?

What's your opinion? Offer one whether you listen to XM or not.

* 151, the clean channel, plays some bits from the guys who cuss but cut out (don't bleep) the "bad" words. They also play Groucho Marx, Henny Youngman, Abbott & Costello, Buddy Hackman, Myron Cohen, Laugh-In, etc.

2. Too many comedians now...
Have replaced "funny" with "insulting". That's not comedy; it's just a way around being called a sexist, racist or homophobe. "I'm just kidding" doesn't ring true anymore.

3. other
I don't listen to a lot of comedians, so I don't know who some of the people you mentioned are. Most "comedy" these days seems offensive to me, so I don't give it a fair chance.

Igrew up on Red Skelton and Carol Burnett. I'd probably enjoy the 151 more.

:hi:

4. Lampinelli and Slayton are deal-breakers for me.
They make me switch to 151 and up. I recall really liking Fatel, though, and Schimmel is pretty good, too.

IIRC, 152-154 are comedy channels, too, though I've found the material there usually bores me.

7. I agree
You hit the nail on the head. You can be funny without being crude, insulting or disgusting. IMHO if you have real talent you don't have to resort to that stuff.

9. I don't listen to XM but I tend to like most good comedians regardless of the presence of profanity
as long as it's not overdone. I think comedians can be funny without gratuitous profanity or sexual innuendoes. George Carlin has always been my favorite comedian becuase I think he is brilliant but I think he overdoes it at times. I feel the same way about Chris Rock but I never really felt that Richard Pryor was overdoing it. Bill Hicks was hilarious and a genius, IMO, but I didn't care for his sexual jokes. Growing up with the "old-time" entertainers, I also loved Buddy Hackett, Henny Youngman, Rodney Danderfield, George Burns and Bob Hope.
