Attention Old Timers
When I was a newbie DUer, there was a list of etiquette for DU that posted in the lounge, of all places. It consisted of several rules, and it made a big impression on me at the time. One was that you were to respond to everyone who responded to your threads. For a while I tried to follow all the rules, but it gradually became obvious that most posters didn't even know these rules. Nevertheless, I still think that our board would be a better place if they(and I) did. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

1. My dear senseandsensibility....
I've been a member for a shorter time than you have, and I have no recollection of any such rules...

I always try to answer everyone who comes into my threads, since that just seems to be the most courteous way to operate......

But there are lots of good folks here who don't do that...

:hi:

2. Thanks for answering
And I have noticed that you ALWAYS answer, so kudos to you. Still, I wonder what happened to that list.... I guess it disappeared down the memory hole. LOL.

3. I always try to at least include a general reply to everyone in my threads.
I think it's a nice thing to do, but I don't think it's a requirement to respond to every single post, and it doesn't bother me if people don't respond to my post in reply to theirs.

8. Yes I agree
Actually, that was just one of the rules. I can't remember the others. There were about twenty, I think.

9. Yes, it is nice.
And it would keep your threads kicked longer, too.:) I sometimes see people who start a thread and don't reply at all after the original post. It seems strange to me.

Since I replied, you better respond to me!

6. it's a nice idea
for people who start threads. Unfortunately, some threads can get pretty long, and it becomesdifficult to replyto every one who replies to an OP. One of the reasons I almost never start threads.

I started a thread once, and replied to pretty much everyone who replied to my OP. Except I missed a post, and the poster then thought I had them on ignore. I was very embarrassed....

It's a bit easier to jump into someone else's thread. :)

14. I agree
It kinds of drags out the thread beyond its natural shelf life, if you know what I mean.:)

12. It seems like the polite thing to do is reply to responses...
I know it's tricky at times, for example, when someone responds with a smilie. Still, it's nice that they acknowledged your existence, so why not reply in kind?

Sometimes I feel frustrated when I seem to be having an "invisible" phase at DU. When this happens, I'll often turn to page 20, and find a thread with no replies, then send it back to page 1. It helps me stop feeling so sorry for myself. :hi:

13.  That's nice.

I've done that kind of thing too. I try to remember that some of the most thoughtless threads I've ever started have attracted over a hundred responses, and some of the ones I've slaved over have sunk like stones. There's no accounting for taste, as they say.:hi:

16. I don't think there's anything wrong with tweaking your own posts, too...
especially when you've really put a lot of effort into them.

15. It was a big deal about three years ago
of people abandoning their threads, I don't remember who it was, I think they're long gone, the abandoned threads must have drove them off. Sometimes, i'll make an effort, other times I'm just too busy to babysit a thread.

17. I don't remember that rule, but I tend to answer everyone who replies to me.
Of course, since my posts sink into oblivion immediately it isn't real time consuming.

18. I don't feel that every post needs a reply.
Sometimes I just post to put in my thoughts, like now.
I don't reply to everyone who posts in my threads and I don't expect a reply to every post I make. And I don't take any of it personally.

20. I thought it was questionable to respond to every poster....
because it could be construed as an attempt to keep a thread kicked.

My apologies to anyone I may have offended by not responding to every comment on threads I've started.
