One full bathroom...Five people:
Scratch that...one full bathroom, One person and four absolute and complete slobs.

Let me fill you in on what greets me on a regular basis:
Wet towels on the floor
Dirty clothes on floor (next to the hamper)
Globs of toothpaste and used cotton swabs on counter next to capless tube of toothpaste (squeezed from middle)-cap is MIA.
Finger smudges and spots of toothpaste foam on mirror
Stubble and shaving cream residue left in sink, razor on counter
Drawers opened, knotted cords from curling iron and blow dryer hanging out...drawer full of empty band-aid wrappers and capless tube of antibiotic ointment oozing all over inside of drawer...cap is MIA
Toilet NOT flushed with seat heavily laden with by-product of husband and son's BAD AIM and sloppy "shake-off" (because lifting the lid is way too much trouble)
Empty cardboard tube on toilet paper holder, toilet paper, wet and dirty on floor
Garbage can empty...surrounded by garbage
Tub and shower curtain spattered liberally with gobs of conditioner and Noxema, tub floor slick with after-shower baby oil treatment my daughters think I'm too stupid to figure out they've been using after I've specifically told them NOT to.
wads of hair caught on drain, stuck to shower walls, drifting across the floor like miniature tumbleweeds....

HOLE TORN IN NEW FRICKING SHOWER CURTAIN!

ARRRRRRRGGHH!

:grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead:

2. They are.

We have a half-bath downstairs and I moved my cosmetics and such into the cabinet there, and using the shower in the basement. I've absolutely had it. If I have to clean that up one more time I'm putting a padlock on the door and NO ONE will use it.

4. The thing is, they know I have a compulsion about the bathroom..
psychologically I can't handle my bathroom being dirty, so they KNOW I'll clean it up...and I will if I use it, but they've gotten worse and worse about the mess they leave behind and I WON'T clean it up. There's a shower in the basement and a toilet and sink downstairs. I can take care of my needs and leave them to that pigsty.

9. I know how that works; I've dealt with that mindset.
You're doing the right thing by using your own room away from them. Soon I think one or more of them will clean it; probably when one of them falls on the junk or gook on the floor. Your job now is to outlast them and not clean it up!

14. I once tried that with my husband.
Turns out he's willing to swim in swill as long as he doesn't have to pick anything up. I gave in.

16. It will get to my husband and oldest daughter after awhile..
The younger two are completely oblivious to filth. It's a waiting game.

20. They padlocked the bathrooms in my high school.
Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 10:51 AM by Gormy Cuss
There was one restroom for each gender on each floor. If anyone was caught smoking in the lav, that room was closed for the day. Peer pressure -- it worked.

on edit: I grew up in a large family in a house with one bathroom (and an extra toilet in the cellar, not in a finished basement.) We had a clean bathroom, not just because my mother and one of us kids had the chore of cleaning it, but because everyone, including my father, did our parts.

21. That's all I'm asking for...
for everyone to do their part. I don't mind doing the heavy cleaning in there...in fact I prefer it, given my low level germ-phobia. All I want is for them to improve their aim with the hamper, garbage can and toilet, put their own stuff in their baskets, and replace a frickin'cap. I'll scrub the toilet, shower and floor. I'll wash the mirror and the sink. But I shouldn't have to spend twenty minutes every morning putting stuff away and scraping gobs of toothpaste off the counter before I can scrub. Well I refuse to do it. It's already getting to my husband. Last night he was hollering at the kids to pick up their towels. I didn't say a word.

26. I do that -- I make them come back and clean it.
I'm such a pain about keeping the bathroom clean that they go along to shut me up. I think... maybe... it's finally sinking in...

I'm relaxed about the rest of the house, but my bathroom is CLEAN.

27. that was going to be my suggestion
if they can't clean it up after themselves, put a lock on the door and let them walk to the nearest public restroom.

6. Well I'm officially on strike.
I moved my personal stuff to the downstairs 1/2 bath and I can shower in the basement. I'll let the pigs wallow in their sty.

8. I hear you..
Last inspection showed my oldest daughter had FOUR razors in the shower. Everyone has their own basket, and their own towel hook...how much frickin energy could it take to just throw your own crap in your own basket? :banghead: And my husband is as bad as the kids.
I don't know why they are such pigs about the bathroom...they aren't that way about the rest of the house.

10. Slobs are slobs.
We don't change much.

That said, you have a man's permission to smack your husband and son around for not lifting the lid. That's just nasty.

17. The ironic thing is..
they aren't slobs about the rest of the house. They keep their stuff picked up and each do their part to help keep things tidy. I think the bathroom is an issue because I'm obsessive about the bathroom so they just let me do it-and they've just gotten lazier over time. Problem is, they didn't count on the fact that I'm only obsessive about the bathroom I actually have to use.

19. Oh my, my, my
Your list is oh so familiar. My daughter has just moved home from her first college apartment. She loses every single top that can come off, Q-tips everywhere, wet towels, the list goes on -- I can relate to almost all of it.

We have one bathroom. I have nowhere to bring my stuff. Mr Gen has promised a serious talk about what our expectations are going to be now that the little mess maker has come back home.

22. My other option (besides a full on strike)..
was to simply throw out anything they left lay...towels, clothes, hairbrushes etc. I'm still considering that if this strike thing doesn't work. I think it will though. It's already starting to get to my husband.

23. lock your bathroom too
otherwise they'll just take over "your" bathroom too. I keep everything I need in a shower basket that I bring with me whenever I'm shaving, showering and brushing.
