Mrs R: African (Mozambique) on one side, French grandmother and English grandfather on the other, with some Portuguese mixed in on the African side.

And how all of those people ended up on that small, isolated island together in order to produce her, I can't fathom. Life's pretty random that way, yes?

1. I didn't post in the other thread so I'll give you both here
SO is pure Italian - both his parents immigrated here after WWII.

I'm Italian on my mom's side - her parents came over after WWI. On my dad's side, I'm mostly English with a wee bit of Irish. It works out to rather a volatile mix.

2. black, white, native american, and unknown
since it is hard for African-Americans to trace ancestry back before the Civil War, as slaves had no last names and no stated family relationships in the census.

The local Native Americans were absorbed into the free black population, and there are a couple of mystery men in the family that appear to be mostly white, others that look very Native American. One grandfather looked very Italian, another very NA. A wide variety of skin tones and features, all in the same family.

He's from Hilltown, "Gateway to the Mournes"...
