Any ex-racer greyhound adopters here?
Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 02:35 PM by Vox_Reason
Please check in with pictures and tales of forever homecomings and subsequent bottle-nosed, counter-surfing (and other) mischief.

Thinking of my greyhound heart dog today, Cherokee Ridge (Whistler), 3/5/95-11/26/03.

Whistler, I'll never forget your exuberant affection that first day at the rescue, and how you knocked me down from my crouch in front of you with your vigorous licking and hugging, making that unique sound that gave you your kennel name. I'll never forget your luxuriating on the carpet when you first came home, and how determined you were to learn to climb stairs. I'll never forget how worried we were about how you would handle a new human addition to your pack, and how perfectly you handled it.

And I'll never, ever forget your courage in the face of cruel, terminal illness, and how you displayed the heart and toughness of a champion until your last day.

Whistler, I miss you so, so much. Your "sister" will join you at the bridge all too soon; I don't know how I'll cope when the both of you are gone.

1. We got a ex racing greyhound when I was an early teen
He was a pretty good dog except that when he would get out off the leash, he would run. At the time, we lived in an area without much traffic, but it was a pain trying to get him and make sure that he wasn't getting hurt, lost, or into trouble while he was out running. One time, while chasing him though I tripped in a hole and fell down. He stopped running and checked to make sure I was alright.

2. I am so sorry for the loss of your companion...losing a loved animal buddy
sucks so much.

I don't have dogs myself, but there is a lovely couple with whom I work who rescue Greyhounds (she's currently studying to be a vet) and they are so devoted to their babies...
Glad there are folks like all of you out there who do this wonderful work!

3. Laziest dog I've ever seen.
Household 6 has one, so when I married her, I ended up with a dog too. Never barks, to its credit, but also not the sharpest dog ever in the brain department. Stopped off at the Greyhound Museum in Abilene, KS, and the 'greeter dog' was just as lazy, and enamoured of her stuffed toys.

4. My 92-year-old mom wanted to adopt one about fifteen years ago
I guess she decided it might be too much for her to handle as she approached 80. She gave a donation to an ex-racing greyhound rescue when one of her friends died, and they sent her a nice card with a watercolor painting of a greyhound sleeping on a couch.
Is Whistler's "sister" also a greyhound?

5. My dogs are always mistaken for Greyhounds.
They're Sloughis, and to those not familiar with the breeds, they look very similar - but if you stand them side-by-side, they're clearly quite different. Personality and temperament is much the same, though - exuberant runners outdoors, gentle couch-pototoes indoors.
