I HATE it when people post a link to Youtube!
And I don't really think much of Youtube. Anybody else with me?

5. Mostly it's my really slow dialup connection.
It takes forever to load and I don't have the patience. But getting DSL is still not an option out here in the sticks.

7. ah, i understand...
dsl has changed my internet world, dial up wouldn't cut it in the youtube watching for sure.

the sticks has its advantages though, no bright lights and no sirens blaring day and night, no lots of things.

peace vs. youtube.

i'd take peacefulness

10. So basically it's not YouTube you hate but your internet connectoin.
Yeah, that's a shame and all, but I've said this before and I'll say it again: A link to a YouTube video only takes up a few bytes. When you go into a thread that's a YouTube link, it's not the poster's problem that you can't view it, so just hit the back button, quit whining and find another thread.

12. He is correct..
Sorry about you having a shitty connection. But, the rest of the world doesn't need to stand still while you play catch-up.

15. I wasn't taking it personally at all.
And ask anyone around here, I'm one of the nicest guys you will ever encounter. I just don't particularly have patience for people whining about minor things like this and complaining about things that they can easily just avoid. When I come across a thread that I don't want to participate in, I hit the back button. I don't post threads to complain about it.

2. I like YouTube.
It's good to see some old performances again. Or new ones I've never seen. Some of the political ones are "must see" to me.

I don't like the youtube links that aren't titled. If the title is missing, I won't click on the link. I don't want to waste my time on a song I don't care for.

6. Ain't that the goddamned truth
Worst of all is when the subject line is something like "You gotta see this," and the YouTube link is the entirety of the post.

Invariably, all of the replies will be something unhelpful like "nice one," or "nailed it exactly," without giving the slightest freaking idea of what the video is.

And I don't like it when they say "Check out O'Liely's lunatic ranting" and give a YT link to a ten minute clip. Could they at least provide a one or two sentence summary?

14. I don't mind that they post links to Youtube, but I wish they would indicate it in the subject line
Then I wouldn't waste time clicking on it. Same problem... it takes forever to load with dial-up. I don't think I've ever seen more than a few seconds of anything on Youtube.

Youtubers.... please don't get riled up. It's JMO that it would be courteous to let us know that the post contains something I can't view or enjoy.

16. I'll second that! I hate those threads with a catchy title and then
a body that is only a link. If people would just put a "(Youtube)" in the subject line, I could glide right by. Personally, youtube doesn't do much for me - if I want to watch TV I'll watch TV; I come to DU for other things...

20. I hate it when they don't tell you what it is.
I have no interest in a blind link to something with a description like "this is hilarious!" I don't click on them because half the time its something I have no interest in.

22. I agree on that point
I'm a youtube addict but it's really damned obnoxious just to post a link with no clue about what I'm gonna encounter if I click on it; usually I just skip those.

24. Having accessed the Internet on a dial-up connection for nine years
Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 02:25 PM by socialdemocrat1981
I know how you feel. For the longest time, I learned not to even consider clicking on videos and music links because they would either not download or take forever to download by which time the connection would have been lost. YouTube would have been out of the question. We've changed to broadband now but having lived with dial-up for the past nine years, I understand perfectly what you are saying. Even when I got broadband, I avoided clicking on YouTube for the longest time because old habits die hard

I do agree that people should indicate when their threads are about videos to be found on YouTube -just as so many people here include a dial-up warning when they are posting a significant number of pictures.

25. About your last point: It's not quite the same.
A link to a YouTube video takes up approximately 0.1 kilobytes, whereas a 640x480 JPEG at full quality will take up approx 100 kilobytes. Entering a thread that contains a YouTube link is not analogous to a thread with even one picture, let alone many pictures.
