Anybody order Living/Family room or Bedroom furniture online?
If you have, how was your experience?

I ask because my wife & I have been looking for some decent family room sets (sofa, loveseat & chair or similar) and we have not had a lot of luck finding anything we both like that is reasonably priced locally. We've tried most of the bargain furniture places here in CT (Bob's Discount Furniture is the big one here) and some mid-range places.

My wife does have a friend that buys a lot of her furniture online, but I worry about getting something that looks nice in the picture, but is not very comfortable. We've seen a few in person that we like lookswise, but when we sit on it, it was rather uncomfortable.

1. My wife does, but only from 2 places
QVC and JC Penney.
both have a great return policy, with no hassles so far. So even if it looks great on line, but doesnt quite match your drapes, they take them back no questions asked.

2. well, that is one thing we don't have to worry about
we don't have drapes in our family rooms - just white mini-blinds.

I was thinking of some of the furniture stores in North Carolina for online, though. But, JC Penney online probably has quite a bit bigger selection than the local store.

6. I've ordered wood furniture from the "Home Decorator's Collection" catalog
A cherry computer desk and a tall bookcase with glass doors. The quality is EXCELLENT. They look like they cost much more than I paid for them.

But if I'm buying a sofa, I want to sit on it and try it out first!

12. That's funny
I used to work for them when they were brand new years ago. Customer service rep in college. They were really nice folks to work for.

8. Some new stuff
A TV from Target that they didn't have in the store--arrived within two days, was $200 cheaper than anything local, and everything works just fine.

Ordered a wrought-iron bed (just the frame--got the mattress locally) from Plow & Hearth. Good experience ordering, but while the headboard and footboard are nice, the frame that holds the mattress is very utilitarian and an ugly chocolate brown (headboard and footboard are cream). So now I need to buy a bedskirt to hide it. That was something you just couldn't see in the photo on the Web site.

9. I found renting a truck was cheaper than shipping
It really helps to see what you're getting. And I got to spend a day at IKEA.

10. We live about 45-50 minutes from an Ikea
In New Haven, CT...

I like some of their stuff, but I'm not a big fan of their living/family room stuff.

11. I've had good luck
with Overstock.com. It's a good site since it has a place for customer reviews for the products. The prices are pretty good.

I ordered a large imported wool 9 x 12 rug on Ebay and was very happy with it. It was an auction item and I got it for a good price.

16. I've bought a tufted leather sofa online, a coffee table and
a dining room set and have been very lucky - everything arrived as I hoped. But there really is no way to know if a chair or a couch is going to be comfortable and if you're paying the deep discount price, beware.

17. As a Democrat, I am anti-life and anti-family, so no, I wouldn't buy those kinds of furniture.
I have, however, bought furniture for my Abortion-Euthanasia room and my Hatred-of-the-traditional-Family room.

has an autographed copy of The Homosexual Agenda (hard copy, first edition) on the faceless-corporate-evil-Starbucks-coffee-table...

It's quite rare...

25. Sweet! I never got one of those,
so I have to settle for my old latte-stained copy of Das Kapital I got from my communist gay lover when we were stoned and coming up with ways to make Christianity illegal, sitting on our sofa in our Iniquity Den.

18. We bought our chairs at a furniture store here...
Their stuff is nice, midpriced, and the owner always has sets and he throws in stuff for free, and it's really a deal. If you buy a queen bed, he usually throws the mattress/box springs in for free. And it's pillowtop bedding. Or if you buy a living room set, you can get a sofa and a love seat or chair, and get an ottoman for free. It's really a great place, but I know they don't have them everywhere.
To answer your actual question, a friend of mine returned from three weeks in Switzerland and ordered a plat form bed from LL Bean. They love it. It's probably hit or miss like anything you get off the internet...
And make sure that the seller sends you a return UPS/Fed Ex ticket in case something is wrong with it when you get it. That should be their expense, not yours.

20. I bought a livingroom corner table on-line
Got delivered Fed-Ex with no problems.

I ordered a bedroom set online too. It came freight. One nightstand got damaged in shipping. But they paid for it to be replaced...

Never ordered livingroom furniture. Have you considered estate sale or second-hand? We just bought a huge 1960's 3 piece sectional sofa from an estate sale store. It was recently recovered and looked like it was brand spanking new. And the price was a fraction of what a new one goes for...

Very, very happy. A bitch to assemble, but good stuff is worth it.

Now if only I could remember the site we ordered from....

And, not shopping in stores is sort of a hobby of mine, fwiw. :)

29. Yes. If You Like Modern Furniture
I have ordered some pieces from here:

http://www.dwr.com/

It's mostly modern designer stuff, but way cheaper than what you'd pay in a furniture store. I have the Deneb dining room table and some pieces by Le Corbusier, Kjærholm, and Casas i Ortinez. Good stuff.
