...and reflects a different set of values and attitudes to homosexuality than are prevalent today, I still don't see it as homophobic. It has always struck me as more of an attack on the stereotype of machismo and manliness. It's more in the tradition of British theatrical crossdressing and saucy postcards than lowbrow discriminatory humor. The audience back then may have laughed at it because transvestites were "inherently" funny at the time (a la Corporal Klinger in MASH), but a modern audience can laugh at a different aspect of the skit: someone can be a big manly lumberjack and still like to wear frilly things. What's funny are the narrow minds of the other singers.

The singer is proud and happy that he's a cross-dresser and is following in the proud tradition of "dear papa." The ones with the problem are the other lumberjacks.
