Baseball Fans: Post here when your team will be eliminated from the playoffs
I'm guessing my Cincinnati Reds will be eliminated sometime around Memorial Day weekend.

I'm still not sure why I'm a Reds fan since I'm a Philly fan for all the other sports teams. But I've been a fan since 1974 which officially makes me a really old fart.

1. I'm a Cubs fan
and Pinella and Soriano were on a SI cover about a month ago. So....a month ago?

But hey...it's Opening Day. First pitch in just over two hours so -- right now -- anything's possible.

:woohoo:

7. Yup.
Cincinnati. First pitch at 12:05 p.m., my time. The big tee vee's already set to autotune at 11:30, in time for Leadoff Man.

I don't know enough about Pinella, except to know that he's not Girardi. I wanted Girardi.

:yoiks:

Still....

12. Well I root for the Yankees and the Yankees will make it to the world series.
I have rooted for the Yankees for 50 years since the age of 7. I have watched the Yankees when they played well and played not as well and I'm still here rooting for the Yankees.

The Yankees will make it to the world series this year. They have Pettitte, Damon, Matsui and the gang and they will raise hell this year.

18. BWA-HAHAHAHA!
I think it's cute that Yankee fans are pinning their hopes on a 35 year old guy that tossed up a 4.20 ERA in the NATIONAL LEAGUE, which is worth about a 5.20 in the AL and a CF who two-hops his throws into the infield.

You know what, just let me know how Carl "Opening Day Starter" Pavano pans out for you guys.

The Red Sox have won one world series since 1918.

The Yankees have won 26 world series.

You do the math.

You're still pinning your hopes on two washed up players and Carl Pavano as opening day starter.

You do that math.

the street from Camden yards. I only lived in Baltimore my sr year of high school, but my dad & brother still live there. My brother and I and a couple of friends take a weekend every summer to see Oriole away games somewhere. Looks like the bay area again this year.

Hope they're in it for a while. It's been a long, dry spell.

Edited on Mon Apr-02-07 11:07 AM by Strawman
The Tigers are loaded with young arms. Bonderman and Robertson are just coming into their prime. I worry a bit about a sophomore slump with Verlander and Zumaya but they should still be really good. I also worry about Maroth but mostly we just need him to be a servicable innings eater. Andrew Miller should have been the first pick overall last year but the 5 teams in front of the Tigers passed because they couldn't afford to sign him. People are raving about his stuff and he might be in the rotation by the end of the season. Will Ledezma would be a 3-4 starter on most teams. He could move out of the bullpen and into the rotation and do well. And Kenny Rogers should be back and rested in July. We may not even need him.

The lineup is better with Sheffield at DH and Casey at 1B all season. We have more contact hitters and more power than last year. Granderson looks like he has cutdown on the strikeouts and could have a breakout year. And there's good depth if any one or two players miss time due to injuries. Infante, Thames, Wilson are all solid backups. I'm not sold on Neifi Perez, but apparently he's had a good spring. He a switch hitter, but his swing from one side of the plate (I think it's left) looks worse than a pitcher's swing to me.

I think Buster Olney picked us to win the World Series. Anything can happen, and there are only 4 spots in each league, but I expect us to be in the race in late September.

GO TIGERS!

76. Ever read the local book "Curses"?
http://www.amazon.com/Curses-Cleveland-Sports-Deserve-Miserable/dp/1598510185/ref=sr_1_1/104-9635260-8650353?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175591209&sr=1-1

Probably one of the best rundowns on the bad events/bad luck/bad ownership decisions/bad draft picks that made Cleveland sports teams the decade-after-decade laughingstock they are. After the Browns made it to the playoffs one year, someone wrote something into a PD opinion poll that has stuck with me for years: "I don't think a Cleveland team can win a championship of any kind." Except for the Cavs (and even THEY'RE not immune if they don't get a damned point guard that can score, E-Slow), I believe he's going to be correct.

And the PD's Bill Livingston . . . "we need to get rid of the "Woe Is Us" mindset". You know, Bill? That only goes so far when your now-fired GM (thank GOD) deals a 2007 first round draft pick, which we REALLY could have used on a point guard, for Jiri freaking Welsch. That only goes so far when the Browns pick up a "can't miss" lineman who hasn't seen one DOWN in a Browns uniform in now going on two years and has not had one even GOOD draft pick in six seasons. That only goes so far when you have an Indians GM who doesn't seem to get in all his frugality (read: Cheapness) that the Minnesota Twins path to success (get cheap young hungry players and hope they become a Yankees-caliber team) depends almost 75% on luck, which is a rare commodity in Cleveland to begin with. It's called "give and take". The "rah rah team" crap can only do so much when your owners are doing everything in their power to not field a winner to begin with.

78. There's an actual book about it? How hilarious.
Thanks for the link HughBeaumont.

Don't get me wrong. I grew up in Cleveland and would like nothing more than to see them win something -- anything -- some day. I've lived in the S.F. bay area now longer than I did in Ohio, and it appears franchise owners here are smarter, hungrier, and more creative than what I witness in Cleveland. There's a greater sense of urgency to win because the competition for fans and attendance is fierce -- two football teams, two baseball teams, basketball, hockey, plus a slew of indoor/outdoor attractions and a year round Mediterranean-type climate. Are Cleveland owners complacent because they know they're the only game in town?

79. Pretty much, and since the fans refuse to boycott this bad product . .
. . .specifically the Browns, why should they spend the cash? They must figure "Hey, we're still selling out the Stadium year after year . . . why not make some money? They'll come no matter WHAT we put on the field." The only way anything's going to change is if fans stay away. But you know Cleveland fans - they need a place to collectively get drunk at, so why not the football game?

Plus, aside from Dan Gilbert, these owners simply don't have a winner's mindset and historically, never have. Pauper Dolan and Panhandler Lerner's goal isn't to field a "CHAMPION". Their goal seems to be fielding a "competitor". Yeah, you're really going to travel to the moon with THAT notion. And Dolan wonders why the Jake is only half full. Indians fans are smart. Lerner can always count on the collective drunkard salt that are the Browns fans to keep him rich while not improving the team.

At least Dan Gilbert believes with all his might that Cleveland can win a title and he's the only one talking like it. The only problem is that he has a whole lot of Jim Paxson screw-ups to correct and has to do it through free agency and trades since Paxson the Moran gave away/wasted all our damned draft picks (Luke Jackson over Jameer Nelson. Smart.).

He has paid his dues (actually more than his dues, being stuck with the poor management of the Royals).

As a Twins fan, I do know the lean times (Think the late 1970s to the mid 1980s and the mid 1990s to 2000). The Twins during that era sucked pitching mound dirt.

62. It seems lately that fans were stuck with Sweeney.
He's got a huge salary but spends half the season on the DL. And he was always an average First Baseman.

72. I do too.
They've had a few fast starts that pooped out, but beating the Red Sox the way they did today is very encouraging.

42. I became a Reds fan in 1970
so my flatullence is a little bit older. Two things made me a Reds fan. First, that happened to be the name of my little league team, and second the Big Red machine was starting to roll. My little league teams were always very bad. In 1970 I have an article showing that we got beaten by the Astros 18-0. This was saved for posterity because I was mentioned as the only player on my team to get a hit. I did not follow baseball very much though. Except for the all-star game, they were not usually televised. Not like football which I watched every week. I quit playing in 1974 too. Quit playing in my back yard when I was about 14 or 15. I went out to do some hitting and my first shot went sailing over the trees at the back of our yard. I thought 'omigod, I just hit the neighbor's house.' For some reason, they had a picture window in their back yard. So that did not seem worth the risk.

59. My As will do what they always do.
Have a mediocre April and May, come screaming back after the all-star break and kick everybody's ass, and then choke in September.

Every. Single. Year. They do this.

btw any year where the Yankees or Red Sox are out of the playoffs early or not in at all = a good year in my book. Anyways neither of those two teams has a shot versus whoever comes out on top in the three headed monster (or even 4 headed if you include the Indians) of the AL central.

the Big Red Machine tear apart baseball while the lovable Ump hating Sparky Anderson poited the way.

91. Mine was eliminated a couple of years ago when it moved to Washington.
However, if I were to call the Nats my favorite team (I don't), I'd say they were eliminated from the playoffs yesterday by the Marlins.

after a sweep by whoever they face.
The Pads will win the NL West again by 2-3 games over .500 and fall to another playoff sweep.
