Did anyone see Sophia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" movie
I just watched it this weekend and I have to admit this was a stunning piece of work. And I loved how there was very little dialogue but instead more of a visual work of art enhanced by both classics from great masters of the 18th century mixed in with a selection of eclectic songs from the 80s.

I know there was much criticism about Kirsten Dunst in the starring role (at the Cannes Film Festival in France - the movie was booed because I guess the french felt a french woman should have played the role) but I thought she did a great job on the part from the 14 year old girl being taken away from her country and into an arranged marriage, through the years of partying & high-life up to the storming of the Versailles.

If you haven't seen this movie I highly recommend it! Coppola actually managed to get the rights to film much of this movie in and around the Palace of Versaille - talk about an amazing place!

1. Yes, it was great.
I thought the punk soundtrack was sort of saying that 'these are the rock stars of their day.' Also it was just total eyecandy. It was interesting, actually, how little I cared about the characters. They didn't seem to have much of an internal life .... somehow it seemed like that was intended on the film-maker's part ... the whole thing was very much a "set piece," rather than trying to drag you in, at least that's my take on it.

2. I can see why Coppola picked the 80's classics that she did
That was about 200 years after Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were expelled from the Versaille (1789)

3. I enjoyed the movie but I can't agree about
Kirsten Dunst. Her performance was fine, even good, but every time she opened her mouth her flat American voice reminded me that this was a film, just a film. Given that there were so many reason to applaud the movie, the Dunst effect was, for me, a disaster. Nevertheless it's worth seeing, especially if you're not a fan of costume epics (I am a fan). This one you might like.

6. But they all had american accents
Hell they had Molly Shannon from SNL and she's definately got an American accent.

It was a bit of a disappointment but I'd rather hear the american accent than have some american both a french accent

16. I guess my point is, whatever accents everybody else had,
her voice grated. I didn't go into the film looking for this "flaw" but I noticed it early on and it bothered me until the end.

8. I think I'm gonna download the soundtrack
I love classical music and I loved what was selected for the modern music.

9. I saw it and I thought it was ok.
I didn't think it was a masterpiece, by any strech of the imagination, but it was imaginative and fun to watch.

10. I thought it was so-so. I definitely noticed the dialogue thing...
I remember commenting halfway through the movie, "Has the king said a single, solitary line yet?" I don't believe he had. There's a bit more dialogue in the second half, but not a lot. Still, for a movie to hold your interest in the absence of dialogue is a fairly impressive feat. Gotta give it points for that.

11. I liked it more than I expected to...
...saw it because my wife wanted to see it. Started out sitting there with a magazine while I watched, expecting to quickly grow bored with the movie. Ended up enjoying it quite a big.

14. I loved it...
Bought a copy a few weeks ago. :) I thought Kirsten Dunst, at least asthetically, was very good for the role. Marie Antoinette was Austrian, and she looked very much like Kirsten does with fair hair, pale skin and blue eyes. The costumes for me were the incredible part (I want to be a costume designer.) The character of the queen alone had over 60 gowns. :D

15. I liked it and thought I would hate it
so the low expectations may have helped. The costumes were good and the story wasn't bad.

17. I love to watch films that are filmed beautifully
A great story is a must, but when you add something that is beautiful to watch... really adds to the experience.

18. Loved the idea of turning Versailles into a 1980's high school!
Hence all the music and the usual characters...

It visually beautiful and nicely done.

A good movie, but not her best work...

20. It was a good idea 25 years ago when Malcolm McLaren and Julien Temple...
paired 80s new wave tunes with anachronistic period visuals.
Sophia Coppola is as brilliant a director as she is an actress

24. It looks good.
But I honestly don't remember much about it. I sort of thought of it as an big, long historical music video.

I'll definitely watch it later this week. Thanks for the review. :hi:
