Weird emotion time... I feel like I've got to share this with people
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 09:39 PM by rockymountaindem
Now you'll probably all think I'm crazy when I'm done talking about this, but here goes.

I've been attending the University of Toronto for the past four years. As I prepare to graduate and consider graduate school options, I did something pretty special (for me anyway) today.

Classes are winding up and I returned the last of my library books today. I don't think I'll check out any more library books here. Which brings me to the point of my story. We have this library here. It's huge... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robarts_Library

It's also poorly lit, impersonal, expansive and kind of creepy when you're up there on the 13th floor all by yourself looking for books in section "U". Nobody likes it. It's the site of a lot of all-nighters. People get locked in there from time to time. The staff, as you can imagine, aren't uniformly nice. Hardly anybody has a good word to say about Robarts Library. But today, as I walked in to deposit my returns, I thought "after four years, this is the last time I'll be in here". As I walked away into the soft evening light, I thought to myself that for the past four years I've been a small part of a huge and well-respected school and I've had one of the world's largest libraries at my disposal. And after all the times my friends and I have cursed Robarts, I could only think one thing:

"It's been a privilege".

Weird, eh?

Edit: I'm off to celebrate with some friends. I'll read your replies on the flip side.

1. Not weird. It brings back some memories for me too.
You are moving out and on and that's wonderful.

2. Are you familiar with
Dr. Jacqui Alexander? She teaches Women's Studies at U of Toronto and she's coming to give a lecture at my school (Rutgers). Wondering what, if anything, you thought of her?

4. Very cool.
Education is like that. You were (and in some sense still are) part of something much larger that stretches back to antiquity.

5. Not weird at all....it's good to be aware of those important life transitions
and to honor them. Our lives are so fast paced these days, we forget to take time to appreciate the experiences we've had.

Good luck and congrats on your accomplishment! :toast:

6. Thanks for the kind thoughts everybody
Another thing: During orientation week they gave us this binder full of information on where to go and what to do at university for all kinds of situations. It said "getting there" on it. Last night I looked at it and thought, "well, I'm almost there, finally". All these thoughts are kind of wierding me out :)

7. Wouldn't it be nice if we got a book like that, at birth, for our lives??
LOL. :D

Our entire lives is a journey of "getting there".....or,....maybe just simply being aware of each moment that we're in.....

Hmmmmmm.....

In any case, enjoy the ride, my friend! :hi:

9. It's not weird at all...
You have just said "hello" to your future...
with a very appropriate good bye to your past.

And, if you ever do visit Robarts Library again,
you know, it will never feel the same.
