Burn me if you like but here's why I like Rachael Ray

My six year old watches her (and Alton). She's amused by Alton and she gets some nice lessons but Rachael makes her think she can cook.

She informed me last night that we need to make a menu tomorrow night. (She's at Girl Scouts right now.) She wants to plan it all the way through and wants to pick it from Rachael's recipes. And why not? Most are pretty simple and quite a few have something that she can assist with making. Plus, since most are done in 30 minutes she'll stick w/ the entire process.

Maybe I don't care for all of her recipes and maybe she does sometimes get on my nerves w/ her peppiness. Overall, I have to praise her. She just got my six year old interested in cooking. She says she'd rather cook one of her menus than go to McDonalds.

But for a six year old this is a big deal. You must admit most kids don't care about cooking.

As she gets older she'll grow into something better but for now she's realized that cooking doesn't have to take hours.

Gotta admit-it's better than her begging for fast food!

10. When she's old enough

she'll watch the classic-Julia. I used to watch her all the time when I was stoned and wanted to be her, if only for the voice!

I figure at the age of six if she thinks she can do it then I need to give the person some credit. If she can convince others to try the basics we'd all be better off.

And I'll let you know our menu when she figures it out.

2. Shows like hers and Alton's demystify cooking.

More people cooking their own food is a good thing.

I've made several of Rachael Ray's recipes and they all turn out pretty well. Not haute cuisine, but tasty and quick.

I think my daughter can relate to that.

I bet as she gets older she'll be more "into" different kinds of cuisine and will try more things. And I bet it will be because of early experiences from shows like this, giving her the confidence to try it.

I just give credit to someone who can convince a six year old that it's more fun to stay home and cook a meal yourself than it is to get a Happy Meal.

I wish she were home for Good Eats tonight. Maybe she'd eat peas after watching this show.

12. Thats great! When my son was eight he got really interested with Emeril.

We got him an Emeril cookbook and he actually made several things in it for us. Because of the food channel, he actually has a good diet.

That's why I have no problems w/ even the easiest cooking shows. If they teach even one person how to make mashed potatoes that are not instant (something I really did teach my best friend many years ago-she had no idea) then they have done a "good thing."

She has a main course, one to two sides and usually a dessert that she makes in 30 minutes or less. And her meals do not come from a box or prepackaged.

Some hate her but my kid loves her. She's on Food Network and now she has a morning show.
